Patek Philippe Chronograph 5070G: 10 years of ownership!

Mar 16, 2020,07:33 AM

On the 16h of March 2020, it is 10 years that I own this reference, the 5070, in white gold.

The first time I saw it, it was in the window display of the Paris Boutique, in 2005, and it was love at first sight. Curiously, it stayed a good month in the window display before someone bought it. I missed the opportunity to get it, but, it was just the beginning of the story.

Three years after, the platinum version was unveiled, and I ran to a Parisian Patek AD to put my name on the top of the list, praying to get a call one day... A call which never came.

Still, in 2010, I had the opportunity to buy the white gold version.

My first picture of my 5070G:

The first question which came to my mind was to know if the lust was still there, after the unveiling of the platinum or if I would pass on it... To make my mind, as always, I had to see it in the real.

At that time, I already had the champions of the category, the Lange Datograph and the Jaeger Lecoultre Duomètre à Chronographe, and a superb outsider, the Vacheron Constantin Les Historiques Chronograph, in platinum, with its sublime salmon dial.

The Datograph:

The Duomètre à Chronographe:

The Vacheron Les Historiques Chronograph:

The competition was fierce and I could reasonably pass, but... There is the Love factor... And when I saw it again, it was love at second sight, 5 years after the first " contact ".

It cannot compete in terms of originality and or finishings with the Lange and the Jaeger Lecoultre, to be honest. It is different from the Vacheron which is really exquisite.

The 5070G from the movement perspective.

No, the Patek plays another partition, the partition of Coolness with a classic look and a certain elegance.

The Platinum was my first choice, which doesn't mean that the 5070 in white gold is a poor choice.

At the contrary! The platinum and the white gold have their own personality, at the point we cannot say that one is better than the other, a bit like the 5110. There aren't bad versions, it is just a matter of taste between all the versions ( White Gold, Platinum, Rose Gold and Yellow Gold ).

I like the under rated personality of the 5070G, its polyvalence, too. It can be formal, or casual, the 5070G works in any circumstances.

I like its brushed dial, too. And these leaf shaped hands, as well as these hour markers.

Strangely, I find the too centered counters charming, and I am mad about the step bezel.

With the time passing, and these ten years of ownership, I could have get rid of it... I am not, totally not. I like it even more. Time is a merciless tool wen it comes to watches. Here, it led me to better appreciate and love this reference.

The 5070G is here to stay. And I even think that it will become a classic, if it is not the case, already.

Long Life to the 5070!

Best,

Nicolas

5070 is a magic watch which looks and wears so great. I love the white gold version as it's truly versatile and sporty, yet very elegant and classy. White gold version is also very easy to match different attires. I love the stepped bezel in particular, i...

The 5070 is my personal favorite as well of this group (though I might be biased ), but regardless, that's a superb collection of chronographs to have! Enjoy.

Very nice write-up and pictorial.

Enjoyed reading your story

It indeed is an iconic model, and I see where all the charm and love comes from. Yet, I must admit I'm more in the camp of the 5170, because of the bezel, the less busy dial and Breguet numerals! May you enjoy it for another 10yrs

Thank you, WH. [nt]

I missed the possibility...

 By: jkvs : March 16th, 2020-13:38
...to get this chrono, unfortunately. My local AD pushed me, but I refused - thinking that this uncommon reference would end up as a shelf warmer. One of my biggest mistakes concerning watches... All the more you should be happy that you chose right ten y...

Each piece that Patek Philippe designed for this series are superb watches to own. When first introduced the 5070 was regarded as generous in its dimensions, when compared with previous designs. The watch has an incredibly solid feel but remains elegant a...

That 5070 G is something very special, it has coolitude like very few other models from any brand. I was lucky enough to experience it for some years after Vlad had infected me with the 5070 virus and I enjoyed it so much. I was sure it would be much too ...

So nice to read this stories, wish one day my pieces will reach that milestone. It’s extremely rare to find a watch that after all those years brings out the same sentiments as it did the first time. Enjoy it forever my friend!

Beautiful love story Nico

Unfortunately each one of those are uniquely gorgeous. I Honestly I can not be as dedicated as you are. I would choose a triple love on earth of 5070, Duometre Chronograph and perhaps someday VC will listen to my yearning of salmon dial CDV. I am saving A...

And as usual, I’ve always enjoyed reading your articles. Thank you for writing them for our consumption 🙏🏻 The 5070G would be my choice of chronograph if from PP and it’s not that the other examples such as the 5170G isn’t up to mark... it’s just differen...

I think the subtle, or maybe it’s not so subtle, influences of certain members here led me to an appreciation for this reference. To my regret I’ve never managed to spend any real time with one, seen several at auction previews but always a little rushed ...

Honestly...

 By: CL : March 17th, 2020-19:50
5070G is my favourite if you compare it with 5070P. I think it is the classic and the epitome of 5070. The 5070P came along much later and the blue dial... either you love it or you not. I don't. But imagine if they come out a special edition... a 5070 St...

Great post Nico as always.

Your love for the 5070 is great to see. It is for sure here to stay and will be around long after this awful virus has gone away. The 5070 in any colour is a great watch to look at and belongs in all Patek collectors watch box. For me it wasn’t necessaril...

I also feel the 5070G is the best modern simple chrono by Patek in recent years. But like you, I would not mind adding a 5370P and a 5970P in the future if possible but those are not simple chronos 😉 Will start a wristshot post and roll call for 5070s to ...

Great timepiece mon ami! I wished I had one for ten years! I definitely share the same sentiments with you regarding not finding the platinum version. But I also share the same sentiments that sometimes we just find a different version which we may enjoy ...

I should! Fantastic piece!

Hopefully I'll be able to find one someday!
