Patek Philippe

It is hard to tell

I've learned from different sources (reading and discussions) that he is indeed behind the 5970. I think that for people who have been liking Patek for a while now and who discover the new trend from the brand, T Stern is always the problem. I think that they are wrong and that it is an easy way to find a guilty party.

If we have a look back at the references presented since the Sterns took over the brand, there are in fact many "no so nice looking" watches that we don't really see often but that existed nevertheless. We naturally tend to judge the past from the only baest watches they produced but Patek didn't only unveiled nice Calatravas or 1518 and 2499.

The design hasn't changed because it has always changed. In a world of Calatravas and very classical and traditional models, the Nautilus (that wasn't very successful at the beginning in 1976) was much more of a change than any 5524, 5960A etc...

The 5070 (size, thickness, design...) was imho as different from what people expected as the 5930 and 5524 today.

The thing is that we take what was in the past for absolute references, as they were unveiled perfect from the start but it is the fact they existed and that our taste was shaped by them that we like them today.

One example, the more you see Nautiluses, 5110 and 5070 on forums and more people like them, the more they become successful.

This being said, in such context and knowing a little more about how our likings work, we should aslo remain open to the newest references (5524, 5930, 5235, 5320 etc...).

Of course, this doesn't mean that nay novelty will be appreciated after a few years. Some that will not be in phase with the aesthetical standards of the newt decades will not be successful.

Hence, I would say that it is very hard to know what reference will be considered the "right" ones in the future (as not to be seen with yesterday's standards). And I would also say that it doesn't matter and as long as the watch is concerned (and not investment that we'll leave each one to make its own idea on the subject), the pleasure from wearing it or admiring it is all that counts.

Thanks for bringing that up Alex.

Best, Mark
