Is there anyone using the denim-look calfskin strap from the 5980/60g with this 5712g? This is a photo from an online retailer called omniluxe. It says "gunny strap."

Gunny straps is one of many aftermarket strap makers.
This particular denim strap is too distressed for my taste, but I do like the one that Patek makes.

“patek denim strap on 5712g” and saw a number of better pictures that will give you a better idea.
That’s exactly what I think is the reason.

I think the original Patek denim strap should look great on a 5712. Have just received mine from the Singapore service centre for my 5110p to tone it down and I love it 🥰 ...
I know that this new strap is popular since the new reference was introduced...but...
(to me)....It's nowhere as elegant as pretty much "any" gator....

I purchased an original PP denim strap at the end of last year. It looks fantastic on my 5712G — the combination of the grey dial and the blue denim works wonderfully. Please find a few shots attached. Take care, and let’s keep the passion alive! ...
