Patek Philippe

Edward, I'm surprised that you're surprised!

According to Thierry Stern it is a Stern family tradition that at age 21 they choose a Patek as their coming of age gift, he chose a Nautilus. Therefore I doubt he cringes every time one is made - especially as he was heavily involved with the design of the 2006 re launch model.

When you consider even the cost of a replacement Patek leather strap it makes a metal bracelet look like a sensible option for everyday use. Also the sporty design of the Nautilus gives a little more faith in the watches ability to absorb a knock without resulting in a 3k repair bill.

Another point in favour of the Nautilus is that it is in demand on the secondary market so residuals are ok, whereas with some other Pateks that are tricky to sell on.

The Nautilus will always look like a high end sports watch even to people unfamiliar with Patek, I know that a big part of Patek appeal is that many of the designs are understated however some Pateks are so understated that the uninitiated would fail to see even a fraction of the value.

In my opinion the Nautilus 5980 and the more traditional 5270 are the most attractive Patek models. The Nautilus would be the daily wearer for me, the fact that Gerald Genta designed it does not spoil the way I think about it, it probably explains why I like it so much.
