If and when your buddy gets it, ask him for a photo . . .
. . . of the back of the dial. That could help settle the matter.
I could find no technical issue with the dial (or hands or crown) - it was simply the unlikelihood of it surviving six decades without a hint of aging that unnerved me.

Looks very nice, even if a redial. If you were to buy it would anyone on the street even know its a redial, most likely never notice, it would take a true "watch person" to notice and odds are slim and none they would notice. Again, nice watch!!
