SIHH 2019: Panerai Submersible Carbotech Marina Militare 47 mm references PAM 961 and 979.

Feb 05, 2019,00:40 AM

While till then Panerai Marina Militare were the apanage of the Luminor line, at the exception of the Radiomir PAM 339, we have, this year a revolution with the introduction of 2 " Marina Militare  Submersible ", the PAM 961 and the PAM 979.

The PAM 961:

The PAM 979:

Truth to be told, I don't understand some things, here.

First of all, why two very close Submersible badged Marina Militare? Indeed, both come with the same case, bezel, case back ( Carbotech for the case and bezel / Blackened Titanium for the case back ) and dial ( Carbon ).

PAM 961:

PAM 979:

Same movement, too, with the Cal 9010, automatic, 3 days power reserve, with the possibility to adjust the hours independently from the minutes.

Then, why a difference of 20, 000 euros between these 2 ( 39, 900 Euros for the PAM 961, 19, 900 Euros for the PAM 979 )... The fact that the PAM 961 is limited to 33 pieces and that you will be offered a training day with the Italian Marine Commandos doesn't justify such a difference in price, in my opinion.

It seems it is the year of the Submersible, for Panerai, with other watches unveiled from the same line, especially the Luna Rossa...

I would have loved to see some stuff for the old school guys among us, to tell you all.

And why not, a Marina Militare in the Submersible line, and another Marina Militare in the Luminor line.

But two Marina Militare Submersible? I really don't get it.

And even the price of the PAM 979 is very high... When you think that a PAM 587 Marina Militare is half the price, but not half the desirability of the 979...

Looking forward to reading your comments and thoughts,

Best.

Nicolas

You raised some very valid questions

First things first. The use of ‘Marina Militare’ on the dial has always been used sparingly and amongst Paneristi collectors, is considered somewhat special and a rarity. So I ask the rhetorical question, why cheapen the lineage of Panerai, Marina Militar...

Also one more thing

For the 961, what is the reason only 33 pieces are made? I don’t understand. For something to be this limited, there must be a special meaning behind it. For me I don’t know if there is one. If there is no special meaning why can’t it be at least 50 to 10...

A bit of history...

Throughout their history the MM has issued medals of Military Valour to 33 of their men, thus the edition of 33.

Beef, thanks for sharing this with me

Appreciate it

The green accent version on the fabric strap is hot!

But . . . the price is ridiculous. M4

The only thing that comes into my mind....

when looking at these two pieces is: "They sure look the part". Rugged, gung-ho, like the tough guys for which they were allegedly produced. A man's watch that will stand out "in a crowd" of gin&tonic guzzling macho men, at a fashionable watering hole...

I like the look of the 961.

The price?, not that much. I would like to know why the HUGE price difference. Maybe the green stuff on the indexes and hands comes directly from Krypton, therefore, the shipping costs are from out of this world, or maybe not. :P Vte

The Original Super Models wouldn't get out of bed for less than $10,000

30 years later and adjusted for inflation, the MM do the same. It's great work if you can get it. ...

Good one, my friend. [nt]

Panerai is overestimating their brand name

Way over priced for essentially a case design they used for the last 50 years. They are thinking way to highly of themselves to be pricing themselves in Jaeger LeCoultre, Vacheron, Audemars, ect. price bracket.

I agree with you, to an extent...but

I've spent most of my life trying to convince the salespersons that worked with me/for me that: if you believe it...they'll believe it. Also actors use the same technique. Who do you think you are? It's a question that must be answered within oneself, not...

History repeats it self.

They continued to priced themselves out of their market a few years ago when the Panerai fad had died. They thought they can ride the craze forever when in fact, the fad had died a long time ago. Sales started to drop because people were not so willing to...

True! [nt]

Never really was a big Submersible fan

 By: reintitan : February 5th, 2019-13:20
Being that they are homages to Panerai's first watch they built themselves (and not relying on Rolex to build it for them), the GPF 2/56 "Big Egiziano" which never appealed to me aesthetically anyway. Add to that I'm not a carbon fiber/Carbotech (looks li...

Me... ;) [nt]

Absolutely!

The Egiziano represents Panerai’s latest evolution in navy dive watches. While the Submersibles are an imagination of what it could’ve been,I would love to have a modern sized 47mm version of the PAM 341.
