With all the craziness in the watch auctions this year, I'm very surprised Sly's Panerai sold for that amount, especially with the legit "provenance" attached to it.

I've seen "rumored" watches with false provenance going for crazy final hammer prices.

Watch auctions are very unpredictable especially with what we've seen in this "crazy" year...

In my eyes it is a normal Luminor.

IMO "better" than anything vintage which may have captured high sale prices, and with the celebrity connection / provenance that does add much value these days.

And in this case the celebrity connection goes beyond just the wearing / owning of the watch, Stallone is part of modern Panerai history. And then, it's pure Panerai in terms of it being a "base". The purest / strongest of designs, unmistakable.

Agree

A Heuer Monaco given by Steve McQueen sells for 2.2 million and a Daytona owned by Paul Newman sell for 5.5 million ..... a tad over 200,000 for Sylvester his panerai that was seen in the movie daylight and started the panerai brand....well 200,000 on tha...

The buyer didn't buy a Panerai 5218-201A.....

he bought a piece of movie memorabilia, which transcends the object itself. IMO

Nicely put.

We’ll not know for sure unless we find out who purchased the watch but I would tend to think this is not the case.

He/she, or perhaps they (dealers have been known to split the “bet”), did for sure buy something which transcends the object itself but I would think it’s far more than just “movie memorabilia”. All said, I do defer to you and your knowledge of the brand ...
