24 Hours Le Mans Race... It is all about Friendship, watches, and cars.

Jun 15, 2009,00:32 AM

We were some " happy few " to be invited for an extraodinary week end, which coincided with the Legendary Car Race, and with the presentation of a very nice version of the yet well known Chronograph Amvox II,the Amvox Racing.

It was also the opportunity ( and this is not the less important ) to gather with some friends, and to meet some new one.

So, Friends, Watches, and Cars, this is all we love here!

1/ The Decorum:

A Moderator's Life may be very hard, from time to time, as you will be able to judge...

smile

Here is the Hotel where we gathered, just a day before the Race, our Meeting Point:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Located at around 70 kilometers from the Le Mans Circuit, we were hosted in this old and gorgeous castel.

A warm swimming pool, some nice Palm Trees, a golf located very close to the hotel, yes, Life can be very hard!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

2/ The Friends:

An impressing gathering , where people living everywhere in the world can meet a spend great moments together, sharing emotions and fun for the first time, or once again, with old friends.

A Dream Casting:

POY, Jerome, Stefan Ciejka, Alexander, and the whole JLC Team are old and very good friends.

Some were only virtual, and now are real friends, like Juan Carlos, Sonia, Diego ( aka " Mano de Dios... smile ), Barbara, Franck, and ..;last but not least.. Jaw!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

You will meet them everywhere in this post, and will see that we had ...a Blast.

3/ Meeting the Aston Martin Team:

The night before the race, we were invited for a giant Barbecue by the Aston Martin Team.

And were warmly welcomed.

Dr Ulrich BEZ, Aston Martin CEO, in intense conversation :

The complete Aston Martin Drivers Team:

The ambiance was very festive, and the drinks and food came feeding our madness:

Here, Jerome drinking a big glass of water...

smile

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Here, a new friend, Sonia ( aka La Venenosa ... smile ), drinking water, too:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I have to confess that this water has something special, really...

Another great amateur of this special water, Juan Carlos:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Being a Purist offers some great advantages.

Here, dancing with Sonia ( JLC Team ):

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

There, with Magali:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Damn, this is the same Purist who is always dancing, while the others are...working hard!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Then, Jerome Lambert arrived, which is easily noticeable...

A small detail:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Back to the castle, late in the night, we spend the morning with a complete presentation of the existing links between Aston Martin and Jaeger- Lecoultre, with their Babies, the Amvox Watches.

We do not forget that this partnership is now 5 Years Old.

The JLC and Aston Martin Teams (Jerome Lambert, David King, Magali Metrailler , and Sally ) explained to the attenders what are these common rules shared by the 2 brands, their love and admiration for each other, speaking of watches and cars, and giving some great informations about the " Le Mans Circuit ".

Did you notice that between cars and watches, the links are really important?

4/ Under the charm of the new Amvox II Racing:

During this meeting, we had the pleasure to see the new Amvox II Racing.

This Amvox II Racing is aesthetically closer to the new Amvox II Chrono DBS than the original Amvox II presented 3 years ago.

The original Amvox II:

The Amvox II Chrono DBS in SS:

And now, the new: " Racing " :

- Black dial and PVD Titanium Case:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

- White dial and Polished titanium case:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Obviously, we have here the Racing version of the lastest Amvox II Chrono DBS.

It shares the same circular counters, the same layout of the dial, the same " arrow " hour hand ( instead of the " arrow " which was at the end of the minute hand on the first model ).

The differences are about the " racing " finish of the dial: Orange Chrono second hand, black carbon fiber counters of the Chronograph, orange 5 minutes dots and Chrono Caliper, and, of course for the Non PVD version, the white dial.

Let's have a more detailed look on each of them:

- The white dial version:

When I saw it, it made me immediately think about a Dayto Paul Newman, because of the choice of the colors, for the dial.

Orange, black, and white are colors which work quite well together, linking this combination with the world of Racing cars.

Therefore, which is surprising, and appealing at the same time, is that this Vintage Chromatic choice associated to the very modern look of the last Amvox II generation.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

To compare with the First Amvox II...To fully appreciate the different personality of these 2 watches.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

- The Black Dial:

The Game, here, is a bit different.

You win in Depth what you loose in contrast, as the dial is all black.

The small orange touches enhance the depth of the dial, maybe a bit more than on the White dialed version.

But the Racing look, dynamic and elegant, is still here!

You will also notice the nice visual effect of the 2 Carbon Fiber counters.

The Case Back: ( Please note that the watches we saw are protos, and that the case back is not the one you'll see on the definitive watches, hence the wrong XXX / 500, for instance ).

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The Titanium PVD case is te cherry on the cake, on this version.

With the black dial, it works very nicely, in my opinion.

In both versions, you have some nice details on the Minute Counter:

A Race Flag, and the writing: " 1959 - 2009 ", to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the 1st Aston Martin Victory at Le Mans Race.

What do you think?

Which one is your favourite?

To say all, I was a bit worried to see another version of the Amvox II, which is one of my favourite Chrono, but I'm not deceived at all.

I even think about adding the Racing model to my original Amvox II, because of their different personality!

Here, 2 Comparative pics:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

These 2 Racing Amvoxes will be available in a Limited Edition of 100 pieces ( for each color ).

5/ Time to go to the Race.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

A great surprise was waiting for us, at the Hotel.

While we tought we had to take the bus to go to the circuit, we, in fact took another way of locomotion...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

YES!!!

A lot of fun with good friends...Another great moment during this crazy week end!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

And guess what Purist friends do during the trip?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

smile

The sight was awesome.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Approaching " Le Mans Circuit "...I never saw it this way!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

6/ The Race:

As always at Le Mans, things are spectacular:

The sound of the motors is maybe what amazes me the more.

There is a big difference between the Diesel, which are very silent, and the non diesel cars, which make a spectacular noise...No, at this moment, I would better say " Sound ".

Noise is sounding a bit negative, while in this case, this is pleasure, and a big one.

The visual part of the show is also very particular, when you see true " Battles " on the road, at some crazy speeds.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Life at the Paddock is also captivating...You feel the tension, the concentration, everybody is, as the Pilot, involved in the challenge of the race:

Preparing the arrival of the car:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The car is here!:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Some tyres for your car?

smile

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Now, a funny and strange detail I noticed during the race...A ... Radar!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This bolid is OK:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

But this one is in Speed Excess:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The pilot lost his Driving License and had to finish the race with another kind of car...

Does this Pilot look familar to you?

smile

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Another amazing thing at Le Mans is the very particular, friendly and exciting ambiance everywhere, and I have to say that our British Friends contribute a lot for making it so special.

I never saw such a concentration of Marvellous British Cars, like Lotus, Jaguar, Aston Martin, TVR, Catheram, and so on.

This is just a Dream which came true!

People everywhere, but also cars, and some of the nicest, obviously.

I made a small selection of my absolute favourite:

- The Legendary Aston Martin which won the Le Mans Race 50 years ago.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

- Two Legends to come, certainly:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

As I said before, watches are never too far from cars, and here again, I saw an impressive gathering of Amvoxes.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The Lola Aston Martin Team ended the race at an excellent 4th place, in fact the first place for a non Diesel race car ( behind the 2 Peugeot and the Audi Diesel ).

Seems that it is impossible to beat the Diesel, the differences being too huge.

I hope you had pleasure to view and share this great moment of pleasure, of madness with me.

I want to warmly thank our hosts, Jaeger - Lecoultre and Aston Martin for their friendly welcome.

It was, indeed, an unforgettable moment, full of intense emotions, enhanced y the presence of great friends.

Cheers to all!

Looks like a fantastic weekend, though I must say I prefer the GT1 and GT2 categories to the LMP cars, particularly the diesels. No watches allowed in the pool?!

I perfectly remember your post, last year, Andrew

 By: amanico : June 16th, 2009-08:31
And was thinking the same! No mixed feelings, my friend, as it was vital for Peugeot to win the race, for the future races... And I'm very happy to see that Aston Martin wqs in fact the first Petrol car ( not diesel ) in the classification. So all is good...

And the explanation was about the balance of the dial, by giving more presence to the shorter hour hand... The Amvox II and the racing model are 2 different watches, so I think each of them will find their admirers, and in some cases, the same lovers! Bes...

Nicolas, I have to say this probably my favourite "event" post ever. Great cars, fantastic Amvox watches and congenial hosts in the team from JLC & Aston Martin. I have to say I am completely envious of you all - particularly Jerome grabbing a quick dance...

Well, David, some are dancing while others are taking pics

Do you remember " The Good, the Bad and the Ugly "? " The world is divided in 2 categories, Tuco: There are those who hold the gun, and the others who dig...Now, Dig, Tuco "... I was the one who took the pics... As for the watches, I'm positively surprise...

Ahh, the whole gang

At JLC, Jan

 By: amanico : June 16th, 2009-10:26
I'm sure Jerome will tell you more about this strap, but he ordered it at the JLC Paris Boutique, if I'm not wrong... A Black Calf. Best, Nicolas

 By: david.graham : June 15th, 2009-08:29
All the Polaris' back in the safe so our hard-pressed moderator and his chums can take a dip in the pool!!! lol Yes I noticed Megali's MC Chrono - the girl has great taste (not in dancing partners), even if she did design it!! lol Cheers David

Yep, Magali wore her favourite watch, the Master Compressor Chrono.

 By: amanico : June 16th, 2009-10:28
As for the Polaris in the pool, it would have been with great pleasure, but I was afraid for the strap, not for the watch... Best, Nicolas the Fussy.

A great woman's watch for sure...

It was my pleasure, too, Fabrice!

Thank you for taking us along with your tremendous experience!

And all that on Rolex territory!

 By: Starman : June 15th, 2009-12:25
Hey Nicolas, Maybe all those JLC badges were bad luck on Rolex grounds. For the Aston Martin cars that is! I'm sorry, I am just extremely jealous at you. I follow Le Mans racing for probably all my life and it is a must thing for me to go there some day. ...

That was one of my thoughts of the week end, Starman

 By: amanico : June 16th, 2009-11:31
I love the crying V 8, 10 or 12 Petrol engines, much more demonstrative than the diesels... It's a bit sad, indeed. BUT for AM, all was not good, but excellent, as they were the first Petrol Cars! So, THe Rolex malediction didn't hurt AM! As for the Amvox...

when can we order these beauties ?

 By: jaeger92 : June 15th, 2009-12:37
Nico, do you have any idea of when the AD will be able to deliver the 1st models ? any idea of the price ?

They will hit the market

 By: amanico : June 16th, 2009-11:26
In October. List price: 13 500 Euros, for the Titanium or the PVD. Best, Nicolas

Some remarks !

 By: bimbeano : June 15th, 2009-13:02
Nicolas, despite this being one of the maddest posts on this forum (it is totally sublime !!!!!) i have some serious remarks. First :In the chopper you look a bit anxious, hĂ©hĂ© ... Second: You told us you supported the Aston Martin team but it seems like ...

Hi, Filip

 By: amanico : June 16th, 2009-11:51

Superb post Nico !

I love your pictures and review. Looks like everyone had a good time last weekend. Having looked at the new AMVOX2 pictures extensively, I think I would have preferred the white dial on the black PVD case and the black dial on the polished titanium case. ...

Interesting suggestion, IWC!

Yep, it would be interesting to imagine this combo! But as they are here, I find them dangerously appealing, even for me, who own the first generation... I need to think about it... Thanks for your nice words, IWC, I can tell you that the most pleasing th...

Just look at the first generation...

AMVOX2 you own. It's black PVD case and the dial has the silver ring. It looks perfect and the AMVOX2 Racing with the white face will look even more perfect in the black PVD case.

Naaah, on the pics I wore

...as Robin Leach, host of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous used to say on the show. Nicolas, you certainly were living the high life, and I think it was a well-deserved treat. Great reporting! I felt I was able to experience the event in some small way ...

Thanks, Sister

Can't really say which one these 2 I prefer.... THanks for your kind words, Daos. Nicolas

I forgot to ask you a question about the PVD model

 By: dxboon : June 17th, 2009-22:41
Sorry, Nicolas, I had meant to ask this earlier, but will the PVD'd Racing come with colored chrono levers or silver ones? I believe in one picture the prototype appears to have silver levers and in another orange ones. Am I mistaken somehow? Thanks again...

You have eagle eye, Daos!

These are protos, so things will be improved, of course. Yes, on the 2 black Racing Amvox, one doesn't have the orange Chrono levers, the good one being the orange, of course. Best, Nicolas

Stellar event, Nicolas!

Wonderful post, thank you for sharing your experience. My friend, I cannot decide which watch I like better. Intuition says it has to be the PVD, but that white dial looks gorgeous. Any elaboration between the two?

Both have a different personality, Michael

And also different reasons to love... With the All black, you have a strong watch, with a very powerful look, dynamized by these small touches of orange. With the White dialed one, you play the card of the Vintage, a kind of Paul Newman JLC with this " ex...

What a lovely trip you had.

Great day. Great time with great people. Just perfect. BTW, I found Amvox2 DBS in SS among your photos. Is this watch same as in the JLC homepage, 499 LE? Best, Jean
