... watches like the Submariner or the Planet Ocean go with suit and tie as well as flip-flops would. I know, many are telling the contrary, and many high-ranking CEOs proof their lack of taste every day, when posing for pictures with suit and a G-shock or a big and bulky steel bracelet sports watch on their wrists. But just as the Earth is not flat, such watches do not go with suits.
Regarding your choice, the IWC Portofino, I'd say there are countless options worse than that - but nearly as many are better than that.
It all depends on your budget, and if you would be ready to consider pre-owned watches as well.
Generally, if the watch should be a good mixture of elegance, fashion and sportive expression, then there are interesting watches from Omega (not the Planet Ocean, of course), like the Semaster AquaTerra, or the DeVille. Then, there is Zenith with many great watches and mechanics, but also Breitling has a few elegantly-looking watches, the Transocean series, for example. Also the classic Breitling Montbrillant chronographs are great looking watches and can still be called elegant.
If the budget is present, then Bulgari has a stunning watch: the Octo. This is one of the rare cases where I would even accept the steel bracelet as suit-compatible:
