Independents

Much appreciated - your post

with the good advice!

One of my favorite indepedents Vianney Halter has warned that when certain parts have worn out (say for his Goldpfeil Jumping Hours et Phase de Lune) it  could be possible to remake them -  but at an astronmical price - if  the spare parts are no longer available.  His intention is, with other Independents, to build waches that can be serviced in the next hundred years or more, with the ordinary skills and materials of a hopefully (!)  master watch-maker.

Another Independent Peter Smith-Marin had worked years repairing and restoring pocket watches. Some parts were in perfect working condition and others almost totally destroyed - as well as being irreplacible without using other "original" parts. To "cannibalize" them from other watches of the period or to  attempt to replicate them may not the preferable, proper or ethical  way to go - unless well documented in the restoration.

This is one of the reasons why Vianney left his tiny workshop in Paris, against customer demands. Such watches were no longer "honest".

Independents can disappear from the scene and their spare parts swept into the dustbin. Very, very, extremely sad!

So I think that an inventory of spare parts is crucial, and to secure a few in advance the right way to go!

Thanks very much for your reply!
