It is one of my most important dilemma, well, let's say question.
You raise a very important point, Surfer.
I always wondered how much a service on an Independant watch will cost, and how it will turn IF the Independant in question disappears ( who will service the watch is the horological content is too technical or original... See, for example, De Bethune ).
The price and the possibility to service such a watch in let's say 10 / 15 years, is my main issue, here.
An Independant, by definition, is a small company, with a very low production.
So, his fragility is questionable. How many will survive in a laps of 10 or 15 years?
Their smal prduction mayt also have an impact on the required time to service a watch, and on the cost of such a service / repair...
Which is funny is that we often ask what is the cost of a service when it comes to a car, we almost never ask when it comes to watches!
I think we should have more interest on that, BEFORE buying any watch, from Independants AND big brands...

I often think about the servicing of watches and what the future will hold... but then think do I love the piece enough to warrant any future problems.... normally the answer is yes so I just save up and buy the piece. With advancements in the technology ...

watches have not changed that much in the last few hundred years, lets face it the tourbillon was invented in 1795. A simple watch, whether made by eta or MOser should be able to be looked after by a good watch maker, even more complicated ones should not...

.. Follow your heart. I believe t he many years of happiness and satisfaction with a piece that you truly love and relate to far outweigh the potential extra that you may have to spend on servicing an Independent watch.
