If I'm to enjoy all this at a leisurely pursuit, that requires the presence of mind to walk away when the timing and opportunity don't suit. It also helps to take time away from fora like this one, which I've just done for the last 4-6 weeks. Social media chatter, one-sided effusive celebration, and clubby bonhomie are all well and good, but I also enjoy the space necessary for dispassionate appreciation, not to mention to hear my own voice again. The sales models of some independents and collaborations are the antithesis of what I want my experience to be (a point you've made well).
As for astronomical watches, I've played a little dance for the last six months with the work of Christiaan van der Klaauw, having spoken with Maria at CVDK and a number of merchants around a specific reference. I'm rather glad it's taking this long to work out because it gives me ample time to mull things over. The same applies to a particular Montblanc 1858 Monopoussoir reference. The Antiquorum catalogue landed last week and it's a 400-page monster this time. There's one watch in there I have reason to want. But if it doesn't happen, no big deal. I'm just amazed that watch exists at all and that someone within a tiny niche will come to enjoy it. I may end up with one, two or three watches from this latest dalliance. Or none. If it's the latter, so be it!

And the reason I know is that we're kindred spirits. Did I mention three more watch straps arrived today. Four more are in transit. Even my wife said i needed more 22mm straps(!).

I have never ever changed a watch strap though. All my watches have their original straps - call me boring or unadventurous and you may be spot on!

I was just fortunate to look at the site at the right time of the day. I guess some things are just meant to be! I am looking forward to trying this watch on. It measures only 10.7mm high but it somehow looks thicker!

When I finally read the article on this watch (after being allocated the piece!), I was quite impressed at the ingenuity of the dial and movement design and decoration. Seldom has so much thought, in my opinion, be given to both front and back of a watch
