Independents

Coudn't have said it better.

There is a bit of an evolution story.

Urban Jurgensen pivoted detent escapement. Dentent escapement is typically coveted by watch makers but because it only gives a single impulse in a cycle it is susceptible to shocks. Their version mitigated it somewhat but I never got into the how. Kari Voutilainen and Jean-Francois Mojon had input in the project. I have forgotten if Derek Pratt was involved in the project as well.

Then the KV double wheel and FPJ chronometer optimum. Its characteristics explained by Spangles.

After that it's Charles Frodsham double impulse. The difference between KV and FPJ's is Frodsham's version has two gear trains instead of 1. It's also the explanation they gave me for the size(But hey how come FPJ can do it in his Resonance?)

And the final masterpiece is RWS co axial, currently in its third iteration.

As for double impluse vs coxial, I have no idea which is better. Just collect all of them smile

I don't think all the independents have succession planning, that's the reality of things. Some like FP journe do but that's probably an exception not the norm. I attended a dinner hosted by AP wtih Giulo Papi in attendance. He said they are servicing some other people's watches. I think one mitigation you can do is make friends with more indis, support their work etc, you never know when you need to call on their expertise.
