I find the Urban Jurgensen One a more compelling execution of the indie sports watch theme at a third of the price.
KV is of course on a different level, but this particular model just doesn’t appeal to me much.
Anyway, am sure every single one of these pieces will have found a buyer already.

The 28Sport: A Sport Watch from Kari Voutilainen!!!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : May 18th, 2020-17:34
Yes, it's real! And it's a sporty look, at least. The 28Sport is a limited edition of 8 pieces in a titanium case, with onyx in the dial, and some super luminova on the hands. It's quite something, and worth seeing, and one can imagine it is quite light o...

Attractive

 By: Cozmopak : May 18th, 2020-17:41
And I guess I understand why they put superluminova on the hands given that it’s a sports watch. But that sort of ruins it for me.

It is attractive, isn't it? [nt]

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : May 18th, 2020-17:45

It's nice, but it's not that sporty...

 By: patrick_y : May 18th, 2020-17:41
It's really the same as Kari's previous works, just dressed up in a sporty band, case material, and dial colors. I don't see anything sporty about it other than the color scheme. Still an extremely nice watch! But I just don't see it being used in a sport...

You have it, exactly! And I'm not sure how shock resistant onyx is going to be.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : May 18th, 2020-17:48
But, a sporty look with a light case.

Good thinking! Ultimately you're right. It's a sporty look with a lighter case.

 By: patrick_y : May 18th, 2020-17:51
Maybe there are 8 people in the world who asked for exactly that!

Yes, we sometimes forget that with independent watchmakers,

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : May 18th, 2020-18:05
their pieces are often aimed at specific collectors. People had a cow when FPJ unveiled a sport collection, but that was entirely driven by the requests of collectors who wanted to keep wearing an FPJ when they went to the gym. I'm sure you've heard the s...

Ah, I just noticed that these are 13.4mm thick

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : May 18th, 2020-19:50
Iirc, that is around 1mm thicker than usual. While I'd like to guess that this thickness is a sign of a case with extra something such as water or shock resistance, it's hard to say without more information.

Oh no, that is 2mm thicker than a normal Vingt 8

 By: sham1 : May 18th, 2020-20:02
and puts it in RW Smith territory when it comes to thickness, my one and only qualm with RW Smith.

So, what you're saying is that this KV would make a perfect complement to your RWS?

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : May 18th, 2020-20:27
2mm?! Something must be going on, hopefully other than just a "sporty look".

Not quite

 By: sham1 : May 19th, 2020-04:10
What I am saying is 13mm and above is too high for a watch. It might appear balanced but a 13mm watch is more likely to catch something than one that is 2mm thinner.

So, you need at least two watches with this height so it seems more normal?

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : May 19th, 2020-05:31
Just kidding! Yes, it's a bit much for a time-only watch and the width at 37 or 39mm throws off the balance, potentially. I think your concerns are valid, but let's see how the RWS is for you.

I await with much anticipation!

 By: sham1 : May 19th, 2020-06:59
and hope!!!

Not sporty? Yes, but some people wear a suit and tie all week, and for them sporty is dress pants and a sweater, while the watch "the help" clean the BBQ.

 By: Blansky : May 19th, 2020-06:09
As for how rugged it is, who cares. When you're storming the Bastille, wear your G Shock. I have my name on the list for it and I'm number 3000.Fingers crossed.

I like the look!

 By: jleno : May 18th, 2020-17:42
My one objection is that it looks too much like a standard 28. Maybe that's not a bad thing. But I think more could have been done with the case, dial, or movement to differentiate it.

Very nice looking watch!

 By: als1678 : May 18th, 2020-17:52
The titanium case is a great idea as well. But the name, and the suggestion that it has anything to do with sport ... What would be next - put a bezel on and call it 28diver despite the 28m water resistance?

28m wr, ha!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : May 18th, 2020-17:59
I think FPJ has more successfully developed his linesport line, but maybe this is a first step.

LOL! [nt]

The lugs are a nice improvement

 By: BigAppleBill : May 18th, 2020-17:53
over his traditional lug design. But “Sport” isn’t exactly the word that comes to mind to describe a watch that looks a bit too similar to his other offerings. Though now that I think about it, it would be exciting to see a true sport watch from Mr. Vouti...

The lugs are different, thanks for pointing that out! Just a touch less teardropped.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : May 18th, 2020-17:56
As you say, it would be nice to see more changes.

I'd love to see it in person, but in the pictures this is a very attractive casual/sporty new reference!

 By: FabR : May 18th, 2020-18:50
If successful (and with only 8 pieces on the market, this looks like a safe bet), then maybe KV will venture further into sports territory...a risky but clever direction to take, commercially speaking, today. Thanks for breaking this interesting piece of ...

Thanks for reading!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : May 18th, 2020-19:51
I think that's a good guess!

Still 39mm? [nt]

39mm x 13.4mm [nt]

I don’t like it

 By: Mr.Gatsby : May 18th, 2020-19:57
It does zero for me. I find the baton hour markers a downgrade from Arabic or Roman numerals. Those provided a much better visual. Vingt8s are not meant to be dressed down. They are classical looking time pieces from an aesthetics POV. Just my two cents

personally i feel what ever Kari does, the 'classic designer' in him pops up ;-)

 By: mahesh : May 18th, 2020-23:36
Titanium, hour markers, super-lume may give the sports theme but the dial layout...the classic part of him emerges out naturally ! Good looking watch, but if it is a 2nd KV in collection. V-28 would always be the first, isn't it? Best, mahesh.,

If chess is a sport...

 By: mrds : May 19th, 2020-00:20
...then this is a sports watch. I quite like the piece, actually, and maybe it's just this definition of a "sports watch" that kind of ruins it. I think if we just look at it as a KV that is more casual/less elegant, than this is a nice proposition. I wou...

Good looking watch.

But ,as others have mentioned,of course not a sports watch.

Awesome, this is the type of sport watch I would actually buy!!

 By: Spencer Karrington : May 19th, 2020-07:03
Although, for me, a couple big questions would be its water resistance and how much impact it can take 😂😂😂

Both water and shock absorption are unlimited,

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : May 19th, 2020-07:24
As long as you are okay with servicing it directly after!!!

Fantastic looking watch...I don’t think it’s meant as a sports watch but as a casual watch. My only issue is

Why spend CHF75000 on a watch that 7 other people have? Half the fun of an independent is being able to make changes unique to yourself

Nice enough Kari, but is it really sporty, or just...

 By: Ronald Held : May 19th, 2020-11:12
Compared to his other watches?

What keeps you from KV watches, more generally?

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : May 19th, 2020-14:26
You can PM me if you really want to let rip!

It‘s completely subjective. His dials are really nice and that‘s why I keep looking at new watches from him, but otherwise the design doesn‘t speak to me (case, lugs, hands, ...)

 By: nafetS : May 19th, 2020-23:43
And also, other idependents have nicer movement layouts nowadays, e.g. Grönefeld or FPJ or Akrivia. But again, just personal taste.
