This wrong perception could be due to the fact that there are a few independent watchmakers produced highly polished hand wound movements.
Just to name a few automatic movements that are in many ways superior to me:-
Laurent ferrier's micro rotor movement, Lange's sax-o-mat movement, PP's 214, PSM's marin 1 movement and so on.
It can be understood that most of the hand wound movements are more appealing to our eyes as they are more "naked" - easier to appreciate the highly finished parts and great details from the watchmaker's effort.
In fact, what is the definition of "superior"?
(1) Accuracy? I think not.
(2) Highly polished/finished parts? Not necessarily except work from a few independents.
(3) Higher cost to construct hand wound movement? Certainly not as automatic movement contains more parts.
There is no simple answer to the question as to "which is more superior?" It depends very much who is the creator of the movement.
