Horological Meandering

Hi all. One of my three sons is graduating an Ivy League school soon. I am very proud of him. He is not exactly shy nor reticent, rather he does a weird thing that in our family is unknown: he thinks before he speaks. I believe he got that from his mother...  

If it were me, I would think the GO is quite nice. It also has some nice movement finishing that can be admired; the others are also well-finished but perhaps less intriguing (more colour on the GO). The Omega looks great and has a Master movement inside,...  

I'd recommend an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra. 41 mm, SS with blue dial. As an active sportsman, he can change the strap for dress or sports

Depending on how much the element of surprise matters to you, there is value in discussing it together. In my case my son turned out to be a big skeleton dial (and manual movement) fan which I would have never suspected. Doing the research and the purchas...

And the budget a lot smaller since it was only a minor graduation but in the end we settled for a tier-3 swiss brand with a fairly highly modified ETA movement but it just reminded me that there is value going through the process together from an educatio... 

I would usually give that advice too. I am lucky in that I get to spend a lot of time with my boys, in this case I really want to suprise him.

I can appreciate and respect that he is his own person, but especially given the finance world he is going into, there’s no reason for him to compromise/eliminate any particular brand. As such, it’s not unreasonable to consider a Cartier from the Santos l... 

Steel with white dial, boring brown strap, he doesn't wear it too often because it is a little too busy for him.

He sounds like a great young man, I worked for 23 years in P.E/VC/Real Estate and imho the IWC would be the best option unless he prefers something else

and he definitely eyes mine, but I think he may want to veer off my previously trodden ground. I just love them, especially since I'm also a bigger man, so I like the way they wear.

The watch come with bracelet and rubber. The leather strap can be bought separately. It has quick release system which makes the strap change in seconds. This way your son can match the watch with any situation: rubber for sporty activities, bracelet for ...

I agree on GP. My advice would be slightly different. I would gift him a watch but get it together. I say this because everyone has a particular esthetic and watches even more than shoes and glasses are highly personal. Also it would be fun to take him on... 

I get to spend a lot of quality time with them, I would ordinarily want to do exactly as you suggest, but in this case I really want there to be an element of surprise.

I got my Mom a cool JLC Reverso too, she does wear it very rarely since she prefers wearing the Rolex or her Chopard. ...

I would go with the IWC amongst your selection, but have you thought about the Jaeger Master in blue?

Patek is soooo well known as a maker of generation watches and nobody here has understood it? 🤔 My vote goes for the Omega.

I like IWC, both their watches and the brand. A very class, elegant, and classic look here. Thumbs up. And, since your son is a young man, I think the Seiko would look great and might look appealing to a younger-generation wearer IMO. You can't go wrong w... 

Of the choices you present, I'd go with the GO or the Omega. Have you looked at the Grand Seiko slga025? Very beautiful piece.

Just based on them being somewhat different choices from not as well known brands as Omega and IWC...based on him not being super brand aware. I also think the GO and GS present excellent qualty and finishing for the price...possible better than the other...

I would go for the GO - it is a wonderful watch, if I read your profile correctly it will have connection to his heritage (in terms of country), and is both subdued and yet very special. As for other suggestions, you could always go for a smaller independ...
