Summer ceramic deliberations
Mar 03, 2016,17:39 PM
As dreams of summer are approaching the thought of finding a good summer beater comes up. The requirements are the following: the timepiece has to be tough, scratch proof, black, and water proof enough to free dive (20m or so). Ideally it is also reasonably discreet and humble in appearance. Activities it should be happy to undertake without hesitation includes white water rafting, free diving, surfing, barbecuing, hiking, camping, playing football (soccer) at the beach, and various active sports with my pre-teen kids. I am drawn to the idea of a case made of ceramic as it is quite hard and scratch resistant. Further I like the deep black appearance and the fact that I have yet to experience this material first hand. There are quite a few alternatives to choose from, but my immediate short list of 10 pieces I find attractive for various reasons comes down to the following, in no particular order of preference:
- Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Ceramic (5000-0130)
- Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Ceramic Chronograph (5200-0130)
- Audemars Piguet Ceramic Diver (25707CE)
- Audemars Piguet Ceramic Royal Oak Offshore (26405CE)
- Panerai 1950 Ceramic Chrono Monopulsante (PAM317)
- Panerai Luminor Ceramic Submersible (PAM508)
- Chopard L.U.C. HF8 Ceramic (168575-9001)
- Jaeger LeCoultre Deep Sea Cermet Chronograph (Q208A570)
- Tudor Fast Rider Ceramic Black Shield (4200CN, the new all black version)
- Cartier Santos 100 (latest version revealed at SIHH 2016 with the ADLC steel case, in-house movement and red seconds hand)
What would be your choice and recommendation, either from the list above or anything else you think would fit the criteria mentioned!
