Similar but different - how two watches can complete a dream!
Jun 03, 2022,09:53 AM
I have been terribly busy of late and I would normally post photos of a watch as soon as I receive it but these two had to wait. On Monday my Vacheron Constantin American 1921 arrived after I had purchased ir from London last week. It always makes sense to ship a watch out of the UK to save on the twenty percent VAT and instead pay the local tax which is four times less (for me anyway). This 36.5mm manual winding Vacheron never made its way to the Malaysian authorised dealiers hence my having to source it from overseas. It is my first and possibly last ever Vacheron as many of you know, I am more inclined to buy a Patek.. But this 1921 is quite something else with its slim cushion case and well finished manual winding movement. A classy acquistion if I have to say so myself and definitely a keeper.
Then on Tuesday, the long awaited Murakumo by Kikuchi Nakagawa finally arrived. When I say 'long awaited', many of you will squirm that I received my watch 13 months after placing my order. If one were to browse through their website, the waiting time has increased to an incredible 108 months, I repeat that is 9 years ladies and gentlemen. So in the past 13 months, the watchmaking world has gone a bit mad to say the least! The Murakumo with tons of black polishing is a 36.8mm watch with a Vaucher 5401 automatic movement. It is so much lighter than the Vacheron (the VC is in white gold) and the soft alligator strap adds to the comfort. I love the off white dial (as I do the Vacheron) and the service shown to me by Mr Yusuke Kikuchi was exemplary. We sometimes take for granted what good packaging entails but I have to say that I have never received a watch that has been packaged so well - for a moment when I received it, I was clueless as to where to start opening it!
So for those of you who don't know me - I have a weakness for dress watches especially ones with Breguet hands and numerals. The Murakumo may not have Breguet hands but I think you will agree with me that it has an abundance of charm. I am blessed to own these two masterpieces, arguably my favourite dress watches, one from a mainstream brand and fthe other from ain independent.
Thank you for reading and have a pleasant weekend.
Nope, not twins!
While you are driving, the position of the numbers make it easier to read
A tribute to the Patek 96 but arguably more refined
An example of a perfectly legible watch!
The wide strap may not to everyone’s liking but it is supple and ultra comfortable and is a tribute to the Pateks of the 30s and 40s.
