Is how I approach date indication.
>> date is a choice that once taken has to be legible and maintain the cohesion of the whole watch <<
Legible:
There’s no point to a date that’s hard to read unless the inclusion was cynical in the first place ie simply to sell the watch or simply because the movement comes with date. These are the worst date executions.
Placement:
3 o clock makes reading as easy as possible esp when wearing sleeves, presuming left wrist. Thats how I wear so that’s my strong preference. Center axis (center big date or 6 o’clock) might be more cohesive.
Color:
depends on the entirety of the rest of the dial. Sometimes color matched works and sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes a white disc brightens a 3 o’clock date so that it is cohesive with the other 11 hour markers. Sometimes it’s jarring. A color matched disc has to watch out for insufficient contrast with the printing. In other words, again, the date has to be legible or just omit date.
Legibility is really improved with a big date. The ideal (for me) is thus a big date at 3 o’clock which is what Moser perpetual offers. Too bad it’s not Quartz.
