. . . is for making comparisons with other vintage watches to determine whether they're original or not. Comparing verified examples against a watch 'under observation' allows vintage collectors a chance to weed out doctored specimens.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then studying thousands of pictures will hone one's ability to discern the wheat from the chaff.
