I think it more likely

A nod into the past, as central second was introduced if I recall (please do correct me if I was wrong) in the mid 30-40es while during that time I think it was the golden ages of watchmaking in general I guess, and most of them used subsecond. And as the comment above stated, it's notably cheaper to built as the second hand was set directly onto the fourth wheel, while the mechanism of central second hand requires another set of bridge and wheels to do the central second. It was the case until the 80es I guess, where nowadays mostly the fourth wheel was put in the center of the movement to accommodate the second hands.

We take it for granted now, but it hasn't always been the case that manufacturers could easily drill out the center and slip another shaft up there. And with small seconds you can make a thinner watch, because the three hands don't have to be stacked in t...
Wow... Was that the real reason? Glad I got to learn something new!

I thought that because of manufacturing another new parts to the movement and modifying things and the likes cost pretty sum for the company. But now I wonder why aside from the manual wind watches, the subsecond on automatic watches are pretty expensive ...

I don’t need to see the exact seconds. I only need to see when it passes the 60/ 0 seconds mark for calibration.
