Finally, road trip in the new ride!
Sep 26, 2019,11:21 AM
Packed up the Macan GTS and hit the road. HWY 395 to Tahoe. Did the same trip last year in our overachieving Honda Fit Sport
which did well but other than gas milage the Porsche is certainly an upgrade. From Tahoe we went to the San Francisco bay area
and down HWY1 to San Simeon where I finally did a tour of Hearst Castle. In my lifetime I've probably zipped right by it
50 times in sports cars and sport bikes thinking "someday I'm going to check that out". Finally get to check that box.
A couple of hours after initial departure my cell phone rang. It was the Porsche Design boutique at South Coast Plaza (Costa Mesa)
letting me know my P-6000 (Eterna) was back from service. Great, we should be going right by there on our way back to San Diego!
I lived in Tahoe in the late 50s and have never been able to get enough of the place. I've also known about the biggest gem on the
water, the Thunderbird and not only saw it but managed to schmooze my way on to it for a personal tour (with my wife, Judy).
What an experience! As a result of purchasing a Corum Admirals Cup watch I was once lucky enough to be invited to view an Americas Cup
Series race ... on that occasion I was lucky enough to become the extra man on the Corum sponsored French entry. Near the end
of the race I found myself looking back at "some guy" named Russell Coutts as we won the race! Anyway, getting on the
Thunderbird is an equal though quite different boat experience for me. What a boat! Originally built in 1940. Concieved as an ultimate high speed day boat
for beautiful Lake Tahoe. No place to sleep, no galley, just heaps of style and power. Later purchased by Bill Harrah (casino magnate and car collector) who added a stainless steel flying bridge
and swapped out the two Kermath powerplants to two WWII era supercharged Allison V12s which are currently tuned to 1100 hp (each). It was a fantastic
trip but it was also great to be back as we were both missing our "Moochie".
Big Blue X2 !
Do you ever wonder if people are thinking "why is that guy taking so many pictures of his watch"?!!
Judy brought some blue too. Omega electric blue Seamaster 300.
Gave my Bathyscaphe its first "plunge"... we didn't quite make it to Fify Fathoms although Tahoe might have been able to accomidate that.
struck up a conversation at the beach with a nice gent who let me take a snap of his cool vintage Omega.
Saw some beautiful skys and sunsets.
Lots of amazing boats!
But only one Thunderbird (after the image below)...
Ok... so now that I've finally been aboard my next Thunderbird dream is.....haha!
Finally, HWY1 to San Simeon...
Hearst "Castle" drive by shot from the bus....
To me the pools were the highlight (well, I am a Pisces after all).
Some of the local surfers
were very skilled! Always able to make that next section before it closes out!
Now Brian, Judy and Moochie are reunited and the P-6000 is back in the collection. Hope you found this entertaining. Over and out for now......
