As for off-loading, based on my experience, the options are:
1. sell it to a friend. That way, there is no intermediary asking for a cut and you know that your once-treasured timepiece is in good hands. The downside is that you often have to negotiate with a friend and that may not be very pleasant...
2. Alternatively, you can sell through an Internet platform but you need good references since the buyer will have to pay you before they get the merchandise
3. if you have a rather special piece, like a limited production Patek or Lange, go through a major auction house. They usually provide good publicity for your timepiece and fetch a fair price. In other words, buy from small auction houses (so that there is little competition) but sell through big ones. Better still, bundle your watches and negotiate with the auction house. If you have several rare pieces, you can usually negotiate a low selling commission (or even no commission) for the transaction. The downside is that there are only two auction windows each year so time is not on your side.
4. If you run out of options, or if you need the proceeds quickly, then off-load to a second-hand dealer. However, you almost always get quoted sh__tty prices because that is the only way the second hand dealer can make a living/profit
