Similar but different - how two watches can complete a dream!

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-09:53
I have been terribly busy of late and I would normally post photos of a watch as soon as I receive it but these two had to wait. On Monday my Vacheron Constantin American 1921 arrived after I had purchased ir from London last week. It always makes sense t...

oh dear lord...

 By: mahesh : June 3rd, 2022-10:05
Sham - you're too kind to break my heart into exact two pieces ;-) both of them are stunning - I believe the case finish of KN would be extremely high. Best, mahesh.,

Yes it is and it is not for everyone

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-10:13
but you know how careful I am with my watches so it suits me well. Best of all, both watches have exceeded my expectations. It is always a risk to buy a watch based on photos but the Murakumo would easily rank as one of my top 5 purchases of all time even...

Two superb watches. You are on a roll !

 By: Horology75 : June 3rd, 2022-10:11
Congrats !

Thank you very much!

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-10:17
Being on a roll has happened too many times with me fortunately or unfortunately but I believe my watch buying days are coming to a close, not because the passion has died but mainly due to my having almost all that I desire when it comes to watches. I do...

Many congratulations, they both suit you well

 By: gcsk76 : June 3rd, 2022-11:13
Also nice to see you again in UK

Thanks my friend!

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-11:32
See you again hopefully in KL!

Similar on the surface, but two very different and exquisite watches.

 By: BigAppleBill : June 3rd, 2022-11:20
Congrats on two great additions to your collection!

Thanks Bill!

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-11:33
Some may be surprised that I have fewer than ten watches in my collection but these two will probably form the backbone of the collection for years to come. It is not easy to choose between them.

Sham, two absolute bangers in my opinion (that is, they are both fantastic).

 By: Jay (Eire) : June 3rd, 2022-11:38
I had debated on the Nakagawa for a couple of years and concluded in 2019 that on the next trip to Japan I would see one in person and decide. Of course, the next trip never occurred and so decisions never made. Now, with the wait time I can only say I ma...

A nine year waiting list is unheard of and not feasible for most of us

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-11:45
There will be other great watches released during that time and I have little doubt you will be the proud owmer of some of them!

Thank you for your feedback!

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-11:46
Yes I agree they are both fine in their own way. Even though the Murakumo has a solid case back, it does not remove anything from the beauty of the watch. More black polishing to admire!

You are terribly kind, thank you!

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-11:47
I would have been ecstatic to own either one. To own both is just a good fortune on my part.

Poor allocation in Malaysia unfortunately

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-14:42
for most of the sought after watches. So most shops only have display only watches. We do not have a Vacheron boutique in Malaysia yet either.

Thanks for info.

 By: Ping.Timeout : June 3rd, 2022-14:51
I didn’t realize there isnt VC official boutique in malaysia. I am in singapore and waited for 6 months to get the 1921 small, although i was told this is shorter than the more popular 40 mm. The service at boutique here is really good. Perhaps you can tr...

Yes Singapore is a tad closer

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-15:26
but I was in the UK anyway to attend a Patek dinner so the timing was great. Besides your Singapore Dollar is too strong against the Malaysian Ringgit!

I miss the days when

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-01:44
our exchange rates were almost at parity - yes, five decades ago!!!

Indeed

 By: Ping.Timeout : June 4th, 2022-06:00

As most of the distribution centres are based in Hong Kong and Singapore,

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-11:20
the allocation of watches for Malaysia is unfortunately poor. I mean you guys get first shot at the good ones!

I guess it depends on sales volume. Singapore is pretty much serving southeast asia (including neighbours).

 By: Ping.Timeout : June 4th, 2022-23:16
By the way i have heard that allocation has gotten better due to recent china lockdown, when all the brands tried to redistribute outside of china

Good news for us then!

 By: sham1 : June 5th, 2022-02:41
But it has been a while since I have bought anything in Malaysia. Singapore yes, UK yes and directly from the independents always!

Have a great weekend !

 By: Ping.Timeout : June 5th, 2022-03:10

And you too!

 By: sham1 : June 5th, 2022-08:21
If you are ever in KL, do let me know and we can meet up.

Thank you very much for saying so!

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-12:55
Now I just have to decide which one I will wear in the morning!

Big congrats, the smaller 1921 is on my wish list…

 By: takman : June 3rd, 2022-12:37
You are lucky to only wait 13 months for the Murakumo considering the wait time now, holy cow!

A steel 1921 would have been great!

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-12:57
But I am not complaining about the white gold compostion which has some heft but not as much as the 40mm platinum version I am sure. As for the Murakumo, the long wait list is testament to the craftwork that has gone into the watch.

Lovely pieces

 By: GuyT : June 3rd, 2022-12:49
I do like the KN. I particularly like his ‘Ichimonji’ and was looking when the wait list was 12 - 18 months but didn’t have the funds. Now with a watch sale I can do it but the wait is ridiculous. Great for but I think that 24 months would be the most th...

It is a pleasure to share these watches with my fellow purists (not literally! :-)

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-12:58
The Ichimonji is also a lovely watch but I preferred the hands and Breguet numerals on the Murakumo. Hopefully, the waiting list will grow shorter in come.

huge congrats on the KN!

 By: keks : June 3rd, 2022-13:27
I saw one about 3 years ago in person over a most enjoyable meeting with the two most friendly gentlemen behind the brand. I decided to pass but have been a big admirer from afar and happy they are getting the recognition they deserve. Hope you find loads...

Agreed! The VC is not bad either :-)

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-13:30
Wow! You must have seen the Murakumo when it was launched. Many had said then that it was overpriced but I think otherwise. It is a beautfully finished piece that many of the big houses could learn a thing or two from.

correct

 By: keks : June 3rd, 2022-17:35
it was the murakumo. I was even in talks to purchase one piece before that was revealed but chickened out due to other reasons.... with regards to pricing I was not under the impression it was overpriced but surely some uncertainties around buying somethi...

The thing with new independent brands is that

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-01:42
they require potential clients to take a risk and put a lot of trust into them. I had spent almost my entire working lifre working for a Japanese conglomerate and tend to be biased when it comes to trusting anything Japanese, be it the quality of their pr...

Huge congrats!!

 By: mj23 : June 3rd, 2022-13:59
Especially the Murakumo with the amazing hands

Thanks a lot!

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-14:11
Unfortunately my photography skills do not do the watches justice. The hands are really sublime! ...

Terrific duo Sham!

 By: RahulR : June 3rd, 2022-15:15
Hope you've been keeping well. Lovely duo you have there, sheer elegance. I believe you are expecting another very special piece soon. Can't wait for you to unveil it! Rahul

Thank you Rahul!

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-15:27
Yes I have been keeping well and hope you have been too. No idea what piece you are referring to!!

wow so jealous of the murakamo!

 By: perregaux1 : June 3rd, 2022-16:15
Congrats, so nice!

Thanks for being jealous! :-)

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-16:19
I realise that I have been way too lucky lately with my watch purchases! The Murakumo is quite a rare watch and I am most fortunate to have had the sense to order it when I did. Who would ever have guessed that the waiting list would be that long now. At ...

Congrats Sham!

 By: patrick_y : June 3rd, 2022-16:45
Two beautiful pieces and a new beautiful person to share them with! Congrats on all three new beauties!

Thank you Patrick!

 By: sham1 : June 3rd, 2022-16:48
They are actually the wedding gits to myself !!

Ahh! Aren't you lucky!

 By: patrick_y : June 3rd, 2022-16:55
Extra nice wedding gifts!

Lucky I definitely am! :-)

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-01:29
But I shall only be wearing one for the wedding!

For that I actually have no choice

 By: sham1 : June 5th, 2022-02:39
as I shall be meeting my buddy Mahesh during my trip who insisted that I wear the Vacheron as he is keen to buy one. And I usually bring only one watch when on my travels for safety and tax reasons.

A solid choice!

 By: patrick_y : June 5th, 2022-18:53
The Vacheron Constantin is a great choice!

Thanks Patrick!

 By: sham1 : June 6th, 2022-07:32
I think I could not go wrong choosing either watch! Well we are talking about momentous wedding photos here

Massive congratulations on both! Stunning pair! 👍👍

 By: KCLQMULKU : June 3rd, 2022-16:59
The VC American 1921 is stunning, and kudos on the choice of metal! Of course it looks fabulous in any, but white is IMO majestic! The design of the 1921 is so unique and something very VC! As for the KN Murakumo, wonderful you got this so soon considerin...

Your comments are most appreciated

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-01:32
I have tried the Vacheron in rose gold but somehow it had not appealed to me. This white gold version just scremed 'take me!', "take me!' and I could not refuse The Murakumo really needs a good loupe to fully appreciate the watch I guess.

The 1921 is an absolute gem,

 By: InHavenPro : June 3rd, 2022-18:17
a timeless masterclass in pure horology. I will be getting one at some point as well . The KN isn't 'shabby' either ........ Much enjoyment to you, Filip

Thank you Filip!

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-01:36
The Murakumo is more conventional in its design and is all about the polishing, dial and hands. The 1921 will make many ask 'why is your watch or dial crooked?'! The style though is unique and its legibility is superb.

Thank you very much for saying so!

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-01:38
Some my accuse me of having an overdose of dress watches especially with Breguet numerals but I find these numerals enchanting and a touch romantic.

Thank you for your kind words!

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-02:33
It all bores down to doing the things that make us happy! And we all know that 'Happiness is priceless'!

Absolutely! Interestingly I find myself drawn more and more toward dress watch as well, and dressing them down with for example more casual straps.

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : June 4th, 2022-11:11
At the moment all my recent and future target new addition are dress watches! For which I plan to wear casually!

In that case you will like the new Patek 5226G

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-11:25
A dressed down Calatrava! ...

I have ordered one too and I too have to wait for over a year I am certain

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-11:34
But for those who are not sure, try on the 5226G as it will surprise you as it did me!

I hope we both get it soon ha ha

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : June 4th, 2022-12:31

I would be happy to get it before the end of 2023!

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-13:08
It is a terribly popular watch and for good reason too. I particularly like the hobnail design on the side of the case rather than on the bezel.

I would be happy with that timeline to be honest

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : June 4th, 2022-13:24

These days the ball unfortunately is on the ball of the authorised dealers and boutiques

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-13:32
whne it comes to sought after timepieces. We are at their mercy to take our money from us! :

Murakumo desperately needs applied black polished numerals

 By: Credor : June 4th, 2022-02:46
Onky reason why I didnt place an order years ago

An interesting observation, thank you.

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-05:04
I quite like the raised numerals the way they are actually.

Thanks Justin!

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-11:22
Both keepers (I hope!)

Unfortunately not everything I have ever bought have been keepers

 By: sham1 : June 6th, 2022-15:44
but I am getting better at this

Big congrats, my friend

 By: rnaden : June 4th, 2022-15:02
Stunning pieces, and I like the fact that neither has parts of numerals missing. Not something that can be easily done without making the dial look strangely empty. We should catch up again soon so I can see these in the metal

Thanks Richard!

 By: sham1 : June 4th, 2022-15:10
Let's meet up in July after my UK trip and I will show you these two plus three other watches - the latest Kurono, The Studio Underdog and the Laine V38.
