There’s something about gold
Most of my watches are stainless steel, but I have to say there’s something about wearing a gold watch, be it the heft or the feeling of gold against the skin, somehow it just feels different than a steel watch. Especially a heavy gold piece like a submariner or a Portugueser. And of course platinum is in a whole,different league by itself.

Gold is expensive, it does however make for a beautiful watch. Rolex, AP, GP, PP, JLC the list goes on and on make gold watches, all quite costly. Would you buy a gold watch from lets call them a "mass producer" of watches who sells less expensive watches...

I've never really had a burning desire to own any gold watch.
There have been a couple of watches I've wanted that only came in white gold but generally I'm fine with SS. That being said I've never been corporate or existed in that space, and have always been self employed and informally dressed.
I am on the same page as you on this. Personally I feel stainless steel is fine
in a formal setting. Pretty unlikely anyone will come up to you at a formal function and say to you, "excuse me sir, I see your watch is stainless steel, I'm going to have to ask you to leave".
There has to be some equilibrium between the case material and the level of movement finishing
In my opinion, a jubileum Portuguese 5441 in gold is perfectly fine but a simpler Portuguese chrono (Valjoux 7750) less so
This is a very expensive way to buy gold!... however and of course the more renown is the brand the more expensive is gold price.
on average the gold makes 20% maximum of watches made by renown brands. I like gold watches but the watch must offer me much more pleasure than the fact that it is gold.

Currently only have one white gold watch which I was fine with because it was more then the material. All my other watch are SS.
I think on this forum most are concerned with the movement...

Personally I have far more interest in the aesthetics of the watch design, dial, hands, over all look, than I do with the movement. And those pretty movements have a price tag AND a steep service cost. Different strokes.

Only if it adds to the beauty of the watch, iwc 5441 jubillee for example although the steel version is excellent as well. On leather strap only as i am not for the bling factor of bracelets. And not for the value
