This may be the first discussion ever . . .

. . . of the Senator Automatic introduced a few years ago.  Glad you brought it up, Richard, although I must admit my perspective has been colored by the recent introduction of the similarly styled Senator Panorama Date.

The aesthetic is formal, which works absolutely perfectly with the Meißen porcelain dials, and harmoniously with the Senator Chronometer.  With these relatively simpler and humbler models, though, a formal aesthetic is, to my way of thinking, a limitation of sorts.  This is difficult to explain in words, many or few; the best way of describing it is to pass along my sense that while it would be comfortable to wear a Chronometer with jeans and a t-shirt, the Senator Automatic would feel odd in the same context.  Its formality is driven by the aesthetics of the design.  A Senator Chronometer, on the other hand, has its own raison d'être, so any formality in appearance would be offset by its complex character.

The model you're asking us to consider is one I'd consider only as a specialized member of my collection, to be worn on formal occasions.  That's well and good as far as it goes; of course, my devotion to casualness knows no bounds, so chances of the SA popping up on my radar are practically nil.

This year, G O has redesigned the Senator Panorama Date (and Panorama Date with Moon Phase) along similar lines.  These new models (even though I've not yet seen them in the metal) seem more practical to me.  Even though my preferences tend towards uncomplicated models, the virtues of the cal 100 make the new versions a far more likely candidate for my collection.  The partially brushed surfaces of the case might seem like a minor difference to most, but they add much in the way of compatibility with more casual forms of attire.  I could wear the new SPD in steel anytime, anywhere.  Can't say the same for the SA; that would be a watch for special occasions only, even though it's priced as an entry-level model.

Go figure ;-) . . .
