Okay. I asked a professional chef who has worked in a 3-Michelin star restaurant before.
Grits and Polenta are different. But EXTREMELY SIMILAR. Both are made of coarse ground cornmeal.
Similar, yes!
It’s slightly more liquid (if the specimen was any indication) and came with cheese mixed in (can do that with polenta as well of course) 😊👍🏻

Not a dish one would associate with the U.S. at first glance.
Probably that is just my "euro-centric" view,
just like many Americans might see a BBQ as something typically U.S.- american while it is also deeply rooted in European culture.
