Best Sandwich in the world...
I really enjoy a good Pastrami sandwich. Here in Los Angeles we have places like Canter's and The Hat. So what do I do when I recently visited the opposite coast of New York? I had to search for the best that the 'Big Apple' had to offer. I had Carnegie Deli but it was good. Huge stack of meat with a nice rye bread. Stage close by was tasty too.
But the real stand out was a gem of a place called Artie's Deli. Opened in 1999, the delicatessan is located in the Upper West Side on 83rd and Broadway. The place is named in honor of Artie Cutler, a restaurateur who co-created local favorites Carmine's, Dock's, and Ollie's.
Artie's Deli decor is very simple and appears to be in typical New York fashion to have tables very close to each other. Space is a premium in Manhattan!
I got lucky as this place like most deli's are packed. I must have scared away the locals!
So I browse at the menu and find some tempting selections that they are known for, handmade hotdogs and knishes....but I'm on a mission to have a really good pastrami sandwich. The staff was actually nice as these places in New York are known for their rude waitresses.
Out comes a bowl of crisp kosher dill pickles and coleslaw. Normally I'm not a big fan of slaw but this was very good!
I was cold and hungry so I forgot to take close up pics of the cole slaw (you can kinda see it on the upper right corner in the pic below).... Out comes the food, can't wait to dig in!
Artie's cures their own meat with their secret recipe. The rye bread was fresh and covered the hot tasty thin juicy slices of meat. The pastrami here is just how I like it, on the marbled side (extra lean meat is $1.00 more) as no pastrami lover would eat lean meat!!!!! Unlike other places, it's not a huge towering stack of a sandwich but they do give you a generous portion. You can taste the peppery outside and it's deliciously tender. The mouth watering sandwich was one of the best pastrami I've had.=)
Next time I'll hit Katz's deli or Sarge's and see if they rival Artie's. So what's everyone's favorite sandwich ? Where in the world have you had the best sandwich?
