E39 is kind of a 1950's Calatrava or early Red SD... or something like that... a thngs so perfect as to defy the limits of the manufacture's culture that made it... anyway... BMW is, to me, now a 'performance' rear wheel drive Toyota with better design...I have owned 8 BMW's.... and a few Audis... the Germans have lost me 100%... unless you look to them for a quick yet snoozy A-B ride... and that includes Benz... they all gave way to 'how to sell the maximum number of units' and lost their souls... and this is no small thing....! The Germans used to make cars to die for. To feel the steering and acceleration and seating position and suspension of a fine German car... wow! To get really obscure, read an old short story by Roald Dahl called The Hitchhiker... a great tale that starts out with a BMW
I had a new car. It was an exciting toy, a big BMW 3.3 Li, which means
3.3 litre, long wheelbase, fuel injection. It had a top speed of 129 mph
and terrific acceleration. The body was pale blue. The seats inside
were darker blue and they were made of leather, genuine soft leather of
the finest quality
I always got excited reading about the car in that story... I imagined Roald Dahl, in real life, owned it--and HAD to write about it., because the car simply epitomized passion and a personal ownership milestone.
