If traction on snow is a regular headache, you could get a 120d with X-drive I.e. AWD. Depending on the country, BMW does pretty hefty discounts on X-drive, sometimes to the extent of it not costing anything at all. 


If you are not a regular caller at alpine chalets, though, even the RWD one - assuming you have proper winter tires - will work just fine. 

Some other thoughts:
- the BMW 8 speed auto box is much better than the VW DSG
- no torque steer in the BMW
- in the 5 door version at least entry is more pleasant in the Golf - the BMW doors being just a tad short for tall drivers
- the BMW dealer may give higher discounts. 

Now if it was a GTI vs the 125i, it may well be different...
