The VW might be more practical .. and is IMO better looking, especially in GTD/GTI trim ... BMW-VW 1-0 Bim :-)

BMW is also nice , but have you considered Mercedes A-class . I looked at it few years ago and It looks very promising. Regards Edward

A friend of mine has the new A250 sport with the 2 litre petrol engine producing 211 hp ... great looking car but i'm not real a Mercedes-fan ... and it's already difficult choosing between the Golf and the BMW :-) Bim

Yes, i also keep staring at that VW-nose .. And i also am pretty convinced it's no slouch .. 0-62 mph is 7.5 for the Golf but a whopping 7.0 for the Beemer, that says a lot ... about the Beemer. I once tried the heavier 420d with 184 hp ... and it was alr... 

a front wheel drive car. So would go BMW. My wife had the 130i, wonderful car to drive. But as aid before, extremely tricky on snow. A though choise. Does the Golf has the GTI seats? Also what about a Scirocco GTD? Not practical enough? I'm sure you'll ma... 

:-) You're right Dirk, i should go for the Beemer .. and it doesn't snow a lot here ... i have enough FWD cars equipped with snow tires. GTD has the GTI seats but the red (in the GTI) is grey ... very cool seats i must say. However the new sportseats in t... 

But i didnt know it also had the GTD 184 engine instead of that lousy 140 hp diesel i have in my Audi. It has to be diesel this time, and Van-conversion which is not possible on the Scirocco ... Anyway, i am going for the 120d all the way ! BimmerBim

.. the BMW will outrun anything because of the driver ;-) ... i'm going to leave it as it is .. i think ... . Anyway, even a 204 hp 123diesel couldn't outrun my Clio at the racetrack ... so i feel no need to get the power up to let's say 220-230 hp ... . ... 

I'd get 1" larger rims for the BMW for a more aggressive look. Cheers, Anthony

If traction on snow is a regular headache, you could get a 120d with X-drive I.e. AWD. Depending on the country, BMW does pretty hefty discounts on X-drive, sometimes to the extent of it not costing anything at all. If you are not a regular caller at alpi... 

I know the BMW has some serious technical advantage over the Golf ... and the X-drive isn't expensive but being a BMW i would prefer right-wheel-drive :-) Bim

Hi Anthony, i guess if i buy the BMW i will take the 'standard' 17 inch wheels (M-Sportspackage) .. i can always buy 18 inch BBS afterwards and use the originals for winter tires. Thanks Filip

out of these two specific choices, I would say get the Golf. Unless we're talking xDrive of course... :-) But the Golf will be the more practical option anyway I think Bent

The car i need to buy must be practical as it will become my workhorse next to my Clio and VW Transporter. My mother told me to get the Skoda Octavia with the same 184 hp engine as the Golf ... that would indeed be more practical .. but then i have my Tra... 

I guess there will soon be another Bimmer here? Anyway, the 8-speed gearbox is a step above "most others" I think and after all the newer RWD is probably very good. Oh, it's even people buying RWD cars up here in the icy North :-) There are very few days ... 

Last time a drove a BMW it was more sideways than straightways :-) ... but since i will have to pay for these tyres myself ... i'll keep it civilized .. i hope :-) Bim(mer)

In the USA we have a Golf GTI (GTI is similar to the GTD in petrol format) or a Golf "R" which is a high performance AWD version of the hot hatch. The ZF 8 speed auto is fantastic. Best automatic torque converter transmission I've ever driven. How is the ... 

I looked at the GTI as well and even the R could be a viable option BUT this time i really need a diesel to save on fuel-cost ... this car will be written off in 5 years .. so :-) ... . A couple of months ago i tried the Golf R and wasn't really convinced... 

but new one facelifted 1 series, the current one is ugly with hideous headlamps ...  

Yes Uhren2 ... the facelift really looks cool compared to the 'old' one. A white one for me please :-) ... . But my friend has a pre-facelift blue one in stock that might be cheap .. X-drive as well and that gorgeous blue color ... and 18 inch rims .. and...

Of a 125d. Which supplants the puny single exhaust for a more normal twin unit but more importantly has over 30bhp more for a comparable weight and no other vices (apart from a slightly higher price of entry) :)

The 125d is quite a lot more expensive over here, the facelift is finally supplied with a double exhaust for the 120d and probably also for the lower entry models. And you can't yet order the 125d ... . The actual reason i buy this car is to save money, s... 

It does the job more than adequately even in the heavier 3 series, so it will work like a charm in the 1 series - the only country where you may find it lacking in power is Germany, for everything else it will be perfect :) And unlike higher up the rungs,...

Hi Andy, i did the evil thing and ordered the 120d Sportshatch with sports-automatic 8-speed and M-package. That thing has 190 hp out of a 2 litre diesel ands 400 Nm torque :-). Well, i have to do the job with a decent car do i ? Hope you're doing well an...
