The former 6 cylinder...
The former E46 6-cylinder M3 is a nice car to drive. I really liked the steering on that car and the handling. That one has an even more metallic sound in the exhaust. The only issue I have with the E46 is the seating position is a bit too far to the outside of the car. I feel that I'm too close to the A-pillar in the car because I'm so far extended.
But the E92 8-cylinder M3 is still my favorite. Might I suggest you try a 2012-2014 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG? The 6.2 liter engine is another amazing engine.

All of the PuristSPro members whom come to mind have two children who have the C63 and the M3 seem to make it work quite well with their families. They're all exciting cars.
