Holy Trinity with the Cayman GTS
Sep 25, 2021,19:48 PM
Dear All,
Here are a few pics and quick impressions of my morning drive to Susten / Grimsel / Furka passes aka the “holy trinity” of best mountain roads. I went with a friend who has a Boxster
My 911 will be delivered next week (delayed again) so the dealer gave me a loaner 718 GTS 4.0. I know these roads pretty well and did it with a loaner 911 3 weeks ago so could directly compare.
What I loved: great suspensions ( very firm but never uncomfortable even in sport +), super incisive direction, great brakes, really light and dynamic feel, great engine sound.
What is really not to my taste: super long gear ratio with the 6 speeds manual transmission while the atmospheric flat 6 is only waking up after 5000 rpm… on curvy / narrow roads I was constantly below 5000rpm on 2nd gear, had to battle between 1st and 2nd the whole climb. To give you an idea the sweet spot of 6500rpm requires a speed of 120km/h in 2nd gear… not really reasonable on a very curvy mountain road where you fly if you miss a turn… the GTS is probably perfect on track but in comparison the turbo flat 6 of the 992 is much more “fun” at “open road” speeds and gives you a much stronger acceleration when exiting the curves.
The infotainment system on the 718 is also showing it’s age - not the main criteria but still, for >100k€ you don’t want to feel like you’re driving back in time…
So in short: the 718 is for sure an excellent car in the right hands on the right roads, but for my personal use I’m glad I went 992
