911 hype ...

 

The 911 is indeed far from a rare car, but that doesn't take away the fact it is a car with a great driving-feel to it.
I remember the first time i drove my friend's 3.0 from 1981 (must have been in 2005) i really didn't like it at all.
As he left the car in my barn with papers and keys along it took several years for me to take it out one day and go for a spin.
And suddenly it felt completely different, so did the car change? Off course not, but people change.
I still like the aircooled 911 for their vintage feel and if i had the funds to buy one, drive it regularly and be able to have ot well maintained i'd go for one.
But alas these cars are not cheap,to run if you want a proper good one and parts can be pretty expensive. Though there still is no comparing to most old ( and new) Ferrari's i guess smile.
I also think if you have to have your car repaired with fiberglass weight will go up as 2 cm thick fiberglass weighs more than 0.8 mm steel.
I wouldn't drive my old 911 in the rain anyway ;-)

Not nearly as sweaty palmed in terms of driving experience as previous turbos but still incredibly fast. And very beautiful. The only thing I dislike is that without adjustments you cannot get the drivers seat far enough back for tall drivers.

It requires proper driving skills otherwise oversteering can surprise the pilot.

helps to make the curves straight,basically my fav setup since decades ,awd w.turbochargers.

993 Carrera S is the one. N/A, wide body but 2WD.

Talking about air-cooled models, I would take a 964 over a 993 all day every day. Best, Volker

As for the comparison of the 993 v. 964, and which to favor, I advise driving each first. The 993 is a HUGE leap forward performance-wise, especially the handling because of the multi link rear suspension. I’ll bet it will put a much bigger smile on your ...

964 Is ravishing but 993 is stunning allure. If I may suggest 993 Carrera 2S over Turbo.. simple kind smart character inside voluptuous body. 993 Turbo is perfect nonetheless.

More than a 1,000,000 (yep, a million) 911s have now been produced. It's not a rare car anymore. The youngest 993 is now 20 years old and the 964 25 years. The reason 964s are light-weight is the quantity of fibre-glass used to repair their rotting bodies...

You are of course absolutely right. That's why I started with a Volvo P 1800. Which, in superb shape, is lower in price than the 911 and much more affordable to maintain. BUT...

... To keep costs 'low' buy a normal 3.6 non turbo Carrera 2 or 4 manual. If you buy a 993 you will offcourse have a more modern car that will probably give you a slightly more useable vehicle. Bim

And unfortunately, it was the first Porsche that caught my eye too...

I was first introduced to the 993 by my grade school teacher. She gifted me a Porsche 911 brochure (993) which quickly became one of my treasured possessions. So my exposure to the 964 was much later. But I like them all!
