Hands on opinion about the Code 11:59.

Aug 12, 2020,16:31 PM

Today I decided to do a “drive by” to the AP Boutique, since I broke under the forums presure😜 and decided to buy the Montoya Titanium that I had on loan for a week.
I needed to order a new strap, and also a rubber strap so I can make it a bit more wearable in the New York humidity.
As I chatted with the sales rep, I inquired about the 11:59 chrono, the burgundy dial that is.
Initially when introduced, I wasn’t at all impressed, I thought the legibility wasn’t all that good, but this new dial proved me wrong (or maybe AP changed something)😉
So my initial opinion is that the watches dial is truly impressive, different nuances of burgundy can be seen, and due to the crystal’s construction, I had no problem reading the time, which for me personally is very important!

But what impressed me the most was the solidity of the movement, something I haven’t experienced only in a handful of chronographs.
The Start/Stop Reset pushers are spot on, no jumping in the chrono hand or the small seconds hand, all accurate, precise regardless of how many times I activated the function, also the crown’s position selector is spot on, once pulled it has that precise firm jump right in the appropriate function.

The movement is mostly machine finished, but the chronograph mechanism is all arranged in on line which is something I haven’t seen before, and it’s a very nice visual effect.

As we know it’s a flyback mechanism with progressive minute hand (doesn’t jump at each minute) but what I didn’t know was, that it has a hacking seconds function, something I hugely appreciate in a modern watch.
The attention to precision in this movement is truly impressive!

The only fault I found, if I can call it that, is the chronograph pushers are a bit short, or to recessed in the mid case, but not a disqualifier at all!
As a closing thought I feel that with this movement, AP created a very impressive chronograph!
One day I would love to add this piece to my watchbox...
Apologies for the subpar pictures...

No offense

But that looks like a Daniel Wellington or Police watch my humble opinion of course

No offense taken, we all have different tastes

I totally disliked this watch myself when initially released, and maybe the dial color not for everyone but the movement’s precision and operation is quite impressive(and I handled a couple). Daniel Wellington wishes to have a movement as this!

First off, major congrats on the Montoya in Titanium, I do think it's a terrific choice! ;-) As for the Code, it looks like they have made some substantial improvements on the dial side...

...which I believe was the main concern many collectors had with these new references last year. Even though I'm honestly still far from an enthusiast, since I had a chance to see the Code in person, I'm also much more positive about what AP is trying to ...

Thank you for the kind words, I definitely will as soon as the strap arrives!

As for the Code, it needs to be seen in the metal...

I'm with you

I wasn't impressed at all at launch. But seeing it in person after has really started to make it grow on me. The blue and burgundy dials, in particular, are super pleasing to the eye.

I want to be very clear, NO HATE

but this dial just does not work for me, as a Purist, if you will... the date at 4:30 is not in tune with our ideals... the dial is clearly more than an Homage to Moser, God Bless Moser, OK that's no problem, but it should be noted. As collectors.... we h...

I see your point and I agree with most of your points.

However I would mention that in our modern times, every brand is copying someone else, sadly it’s hard to find originality, so maybe this is why this watch is so controversial!? While it’s not the love of my live, as watches go, the movement’s precision i...

Honestly, it looks like a Michael Kors watch..

Not my cup of tea at all, this was a big fail IMHO.

As they say, different strokes for different folks!

But the movement’s precision and functionality it’s very impressive IMHO...

I like where it’s headed. I’m wondering though if they can do away with those circular borders on the sub registers..

I think it keeps the fume dial from fully “radiating”. Of course, that date window needs to go as well. Interesting comment about the pushers as it made me reconsider. I’m thinking discreet pushers would work well with this kind of elegant design rather h...

I see your point about the circles but I feel that if absent , it would make the subdials less legible.

I think most see this watch as a dress watch, while I feel that AP tried to make a functional “tool” chronograph in a precious metal case! As others mentioned the dial is debatable but the movement is one of the best automatic movements I tested.

First of all, Congrats on the JPM! I am very happy for you, that is just one of the coolest ROO and my favorite! As for the Code 11.59, I am a lover since its unveil BUT...

Most of the dials didn't please me, at the exception of the Tourbillon open dial and the Super Sonnerie. The case is superb, I really like the blend of shapes. But the dials and the hands... They should really change that. In a more daring, or at least in...

THE DATE! Hahahaha, I know how you feel about it...!

 By: ZSHSZ : August 13th, 2020-04:03
I was totally against this watch, I didn’t understood what AP tried to do, but seeing in the metal, I start to like it. Now off course, burgundy, purple, is not for everyone or an everyday wear, but it’s a very impressive mechanical achievement as I see i...

I looked at these as well, both the HMD and the Chrono

 By: rnaden : August 12th, 2020-23:23
My impressions are similar - the dial colour graduation is very nicely done, the casework is beautiful, so is the movement. The problem I had with it is that the dial design is quite generic, and my biggest issue is that the fonts used for the hours, the ...

It is a robust mvmt. Is it a game changer - No. Is it better than competitors- No.

 By: redcorals : August 13th, 2020-05:56
..but its a start. It is in-house and hopefully it can be improved upon. Wud i buy this mvnmt put in their JA or RO case? Likely.

If you have time check out the naked watchmaker site where Peter Speak dismantles the movement and tells his opinion about it.

As per him, it’s quite a solid and technical movement. Yes, I would like to see it in the Royal Oak/Offshore line as well. Thank you for your comment...

Thanks for your detailed post and opinions.

I saw them once last year at a boutique. Since day 1, the case design / structure and movements have been ultra alluring to me. The recently launched dials are definitely nice to my eyes. I expect to own a piece from this collection in the coming year or ...

No date, manual wind, jumping minute counter...

...a man can dream.

Now with the new dial, I am starting to like it more! Although, I now wish for the hands to change and for the watch to be generally cheaper :p

 By: Spencer Karrington : August 14th, 2020-02:02
I really like the case and the movement, they are awesome! The hands and dial are my problems and they have fixed one out of two, and the bigger one of the two! So I actually like it now, but it is still not my fav ap but getting close!

I didn’t like the Code 11:59 collection the first time I saw the CAD drawings

 By: NickO : August 14th, 2020-12:09
I didn’t like it when I saw the first press release photos and I didn’t like it the first time I saw it in the metal - or for the second time, or the third time. And I still don’t like it today. I guess I hold horological grudges. I associate the collecti...

I completely see your point, I have the same feeling with Lange.

 By: ZSHSZ : August 14th, 2020-14:09
Sadly lately it’s really hard to find originality in the ocean of horology, specially if if you’re an old sailor... I don’t get impressed anymore by any press releases, or any photos. Regarding the 11:59, I think this watch is a real sports watch, packed ...
