Back to basics ...

By: AndrewD : July 17th, 2014-05:23
Sorry but you have to put away those double tourbillon minute repeaters and perpetual chronographs. This week I want to see your most basic timepieces. Two hands, three hands, maybe a date, but keep it simple. Back to the basics of timekeeping. Andrew Thi...

The most basic that I own ...

By: nilomis : July 17th, 2014-06:10
And love it: Simple, no date, hand-wound movement: IWC Flieger Vintage Collection 3254 : Very nice lume on it: And the usual B&W picture: Cheers, Nilo ...

There is NOTHING basic...

By: pplater : July 18th, 2014-20:02
...about the watch that will go into THAT case!!! Congratulations are evidently in order. Cheers, pplater.

Basic, but excellent enough to be my reference....

By: KIH : July 17th, 2014-07:45
.. ah, nice late afternoon..... Beer + Grand Seiko Anti-Magnetic Titanium Quartz (+/- 10 sec per year)..... with nice view.... HAGWE! Ken ...

Only a few hours away . . .

By: Dr No : July 17th, 2014-13:17
. . . from my first lager of the day, and you're making me thirsty already! :-)

Made it to the final . . .

By: Dr No : July 18th, 2014-18:50
. . . in Thursday night's 8-ball tournament but lost, and on a shot I should've easily made, too. Arrgghh!

No, I simply rushed . . .

By: Dr No : July 18th, 2014-19:22
. . . the shot. As soon as the tip hit the cue ball, I knew I'd over-cut it. Next time!

I took a short trip to Hakone - hot spring place...

By: KIH : July 20th, 2014-19:57
.. just to relax. Brewery was not in the area :-) Beer and simple but robust watch was my choice for the trip.. Thanks, Andrew! Ken

Pure...?

By: blomman Mr Blue : July 17th, 2014-11:59
How can you call anything with such a big nob, pure?! ;) HAGWE, my friend Blomman

Actually, the complication comes...

By: amanico : July 18th, 2014-20:31
When you think how to find and fund it... :) :) :) Bravo, my friend. Well, nicely and cruelly played. ) Best, Nicolas

My attempt.

By: amanico : July 17th, 2014-08:16
This one? Hmmm, a tad too complicated, with its 3 head 100th second shaver... This one, then? Well, a tad too basic, even if it is the only one I saw which measures the durability of summer. Then, it will be this one, a superb compromise in terms of bas...

If you turned in the first pic upside down ....

By: blomman Mr Blue : July 17th, 2014-12:03
Your second pic would look different! ;) And if you had the watch in black and sub-second, it would look something like this.... HAGWE, my friend Blomman ...

The futuristic 1st.. A revealing 2nd.. A timeless 3rd.. Quite understandable these choices

By: hs111 : July 18th, 2014-05:47
That Longines is even more than fundamental, it's compelling in its appeal - sober, but also cool !.. One Q be allowed: - which time period is the Longines - 40ies ? on a second note: it has some DNA components from the JLC159 (?) ( or vize versa) Best, h...

Aaah, hs, you are a man of taste.

By: amanico : July 18th, 2014-06:03
The Longines is from the 40ies, indeed. And yes, it has something very close to the SHOM... It is a Marine Nationale Watch... ;) For the rest it is a totally different Watch. All the best, Nicolas

You could be talking...

By: pplater : July 17th, 2014-08:59
...about a good 95% of the watchbox Andrew! Basic; simple; stealthy; sterile; these are (as you know) the watches with the greatest amount of personal appeal. This one is perhaps not the 'most simple', but it is certainly one of the 'cleanest', and (as it...

Ahhhhh, Nico...

By: pplater : July 17th, 2014-09:11
...you always say the kindest things. It's a privilege to have the opportunity to care for this one. Now: this is a thread you could feed single-handedly. Perhaps, this time, you could be persuaded to bid for another category also? Cheers, pplater.

Understood, Blomann...

By: pplater : July 18th, 2014-18:22
...and congratulations again on rolling past 12K this weekend. You have been a marvellous stalwart across the fora. Please: don't slow down! :-) Cheers, pplater.

Thank you, pplater - I missed that!

By: blomman Mr Blue : July 19th, 2014-14:32
I will try to keep the pace up! But, i will never get close to "you know who"...! ;) Best Blomman

Ahhh, QJ!!! Good to hear from you!...

By: pplater : July 18th, 2014-18:18
Yes, it was the same here. SteveG has so much to answer for (and to be thanked for), does he not? In fact, Steve was kind enough to provide some very helpful additional information about this piece - if you're out there, Steve, thanks again. In fact, ther...

A very fine mess indeed!...

By: pplater : July 18th, 2014-20:05
Hey, your 'Strine' is coming along nicely, QJ! Before we know it, you'll be throwing shrimp on the barbie at an electrifying rate of knots. :-) Seeya on the flip-flop, sport... Cheers, pplater.

And beautifully simple. We are...

By: pplater : July 18th, 2014-18:11
...in furious agreement Baron! We are privileged that our hobby/passion/sickness should occasionally offer us the chance to have (and to share) little gems. Yes, a Greubel Forsey would be very nice, thank you, but truly the Be-Ba is equally satisfying in ...

Wow, pplater !.. That one ticks many boxes for me.. Captivating, low-key elegance !.. :)

By: hs111 : July 18th, 2014-06:02
.. A truly very fine time-piece - lovely choice ! And BTW: this is a pretty good iPhone picture, if I may say.. All the best, also for the WE, hs

Thank you, hs...

By: pplater : July 18th, 2014-18:05
...on both counts. Isn't it pleasing that there can still be such passion engendered by a modest, inexpensive, simple piece? Truly: a cat may look at a king! Cheers, pplater.

You have a terrific memory Andreas...

By: pplater : July 18th, 2014-18:00
...but perhaps this time you are thinking of a different Be-Ba? ;-) Cheers, pplater.

Lovely clean and simple

By: watch-guy.com : July 19th, 2014-17:51
But I would have thought you would have shown something even more "simple" I trust you are well Had a lovely shiraz from your part of the world last night Loved it Julian

If it got any 'simpler', watch-guy...

By: pplater : July 20th, 2014-17:50
...it would need life support! :-) :-) Glad you enjoyed the shiraz but (as you know) our cabernet is better again. I'm sure you know the 'top ten', but we should PM (or lunch!) if not. Is there anything happening in Oldtown in October? Cheers, pplater.

I knew you would love this theme ....

By: AndrewD : July 20th, 2014-15:55
... and the BE-BA is one of the best examples for it. Thanks for a great photo. Andrew

Thanks for calling a great thread, Andrew...

By: pplater : July 20th, 2014-17:52
We should turn it into a forum! Hope all is on the up in your universe chum. Cheers, pplater.

Thanks blomman

Such a beauty

By: Poktori : July 19th, 2014-03:35
Less is more, they say. Well, I am saying it again. Gorgeous; one of Emch's best.

Suggesting simple solution :.. We all have two wrists.. Thus, would be taking both !..

Great theme, Andrew.

And of course I love that Constellation. My entry is newer (and also my most recent acquisition), but still basic -- this Chopard L.U.C 1937 in Stainless Steel. (Photo taken on July 12.) HAGWE! Best, CaliforniaJed ...

No, hs, this one is an auto. (Cal. 01.01-L)

By: CaliforniaJed : July 18th, 2014-14:56
I will be doing a mini-review of this watch soon in the Chopard forum. Best, CaliforniaJed ...

Those Chopard hands ...

By: AndrewD : July 20th, 2014-16:01
... are really something special. They have grown on me a lot and particularly after I understood how complicated they are to make. Chopard do some great simple elegant pieces. Congratulations on the new watch. Andrew

Thanks Andrew. I have come to like the hands, too.

By: CaliforniaJed : July 20th, 2014-20:35
They are uniquely Chopard as best I can tell, they are quite functional with their long luminous stripe, and the many angles are pleasing to me. I'm working on a mini-review that I plan to post in a week or so. Best, CaliforniaJed

Oh, how things change...

By: MikiJ : July 17th, 2014-14:13
A very informed Omega source confirmed the dial is original :-) Now it's a keeper! ...

Love those markers! . . .

By: Dr No : July 17th, 2014-14:27
. . . more commonly seen on Zeniths of the period, no? Come to think of it, we should have a WristScan theme devoted to marker design . . .

Simple, clean and basic... a tale of 4 divers...

By: andrewluff : July 17th, 2014-14:55
Tool watches which survived diving in the harshest Arctic condions last week! Checking equipment on the boat... Now need to check the map... Seriously diving in there... Are you crazy? The big milestone, passing the 80 degrees North... next stop the North...

Super Blue Bay! Wow!

By: amanico : July 17th, 2014-14:59
Still don't know if I prefer the Black or the Blue Bay.... Bravo, Andrew. Nicolas

Wowl !. What a trip .. Very basic but very reliable needed.. Brrrr ! :)

By: hs111 : July 18th, 2014-06:54
- you must have had a pretty unique experience !.. Only the basic but real diver pieces will have prevailed, haven't they ? Best, hs PS: - enjoyed your picture series ! :)

Deceptively simple watches

By: AndrewD : July 20th, 2014-16:23
With the complexity in the cases. Great real life examples from quite an adventure. I look forward to seeing more. Andrew

Welcome to our forum . . .

... Curved case, affixed Roman numerals, rectangular themes throughout. Delightful, thanks. Andrew

Thank you gents

By: Geo : July 18th, 2014-05:43
Even without a strap, a Reverso looks good. (This was again a great theme. So cool to see all these basic watches together) GEO

Reverso then.

By: HK852 : July 18th, 2014-00:48
3 hands, no date, manual wound. Ok, there is a flipping case but there is a historical reason for that. ...

Simple but with a lot of style

By: AndrewD : July 20th, 2014-16:42
Love the blued hands and baton markers. All perfect. Some will say that the date detracts from the symmetry, but it is a watch with all the basic information you need. Nicely done. Andrew

Love this

By: Geo : July 18th, 2014-03:40
Years ago I also saw a version with a grey dial. VC did such a good job when they decided to enlarge the model to more contemporary dimensions. Fantastic watch. GEO

My humble contribution

My choice

Basic toolwatch and basic literature

By: anaesdoc : July 19th, 2014-04:59
I really treasure these old "bandes dessineés" from Hergé. The vintage Red Sub (which I prefer on a leather strap) somehow goes well with these stories for me, although it is some 20-30 years too young. Kind regards and my compliments for the chosen topic...
