... except it was designed and patented by Wildsdorf in the early days of Rolex.
They were called Error Proof Radium Dials by Rolex.
The term California is a modern term given by collectors and it is said that its origins is a California based dial restorer who specialized in restoring this type of dials.
They employed this dial on their Bubblebacks and in the first Panerai watches sent to Florence, Italy which as you know were enterely made by Rolex.
In any case I find them fascinating and in the last years have bern adopted by other brands as well.
