Clark was, by most accounts, the best ever . . .

 

. . . in the driver's seat.  Never saw him, of course, but familiar with his exploits.  It's the rare driver that's successful in every venue, and Clark was as adept at American oval track racing as he was in road circuits. 


I had the pleasure of seeing Donohue drive on five occasions, and winning once, at Riverside in '72, driving an AMC Matador in the first NASCAR road race.  He was two laps ahead of the second place car in the '72 California 500 midway thru the race, but dropped out with mechanical failure.  This was the year he won the Indy 500 going away, three months earlier.  Remarkably, my first appearance on the world-wide web can be traced back to 1972, when I wrote the following letter to Sports Illustrated . . .

. . . nominating him for their Athlete of the Year award.

Little did they know I was a sophomore in high school at the time ;-) . . .
