"Charlie is . . .

. . . my darling."*
Please watch this video clip of Charlie being interviewed about and then playing with . . .
. . . a boogie woogie band he formed for performing music he loves with people he liked. (The bassist, Dave Green, is a childhood friend.)
He didn't play for money, fame, adulation, or status. He played for pleasure.
Charlie was a Purist. That's the reason I'm drawn to him. Yes, I would've admired the drummer of the Stones had it been Mick Avory, Anthony Chapman, Carlo Little, or anyone else. But I wouldn't have been inexorably drawn. Unbridled passion for playing drums tempered by modesty, both personal and musical . . . that's Charlie. An integral part of the Rolling Stones, yet very much his own man. No mean feat.
Let's share our memories of Charlie along with favored tracks and the watch(es) we're wearing this weekend.
Charlie, we hardly knew ye.

* Charlie Is My Darling is the title of a rockumentary of the Stones on their tour of Ireland in '65. Also the title of a Scottish ballad.
