. . . reason.  Prior to the Great Depression, the ratio was ~ 1 : 10.  Prices were either stable or tended to decline.  


From the '30s thru the '70s, the ratio was ~ 1 : 4.  Prices grew but at a slow pace.

Since the '80s, the ratio has continuously dropped to where it is now, 6 : 5.  

Bottom line: it's the balance sheet.  We owe.
