Hummingbird (Updated report)

Jun 18, 2022,22:09 PM

One of the hummers was missing from the nest this morning, and my wife spotted it forlornly splayed out on the sidewalk below. Fearing for its safety from lizards, cats or other dangers (my big feet), she called me over.

The hummer looked ok, but was unable to walk or fly more than a couple inches. Maybe he fell or got elbowed out of the small nest. I picked him up and cradled in my palm, then went inside and grabbed an empty egg carton. Since there was an empty nest nearby, I pulled some soft down out and placed it and my little guy in an egg receptacle.

Then I brought a ladder over and clamped the carton to a top step, just a few inches from the nest, so they could see each other.

My wife spotted the mother hummingbird who came with food and fed our little runaway. He is now out of the cup and sitting on an edge of the egg carton.

Here they are together.

Let’s hope there’s a happy ending and he flies off before I need my ladder…

They seem fragile but are tough, aggressive little animals, even so this is the 3rd or 4th hummingbird I’ve held in my hand, and they seem so sweet and unafraid of me. Mike

Nice!

Are there other hatchlings in the nest? (i’m assuming so) Because that is an impressive scenario where you describe the mother as still acknowledging and feeding her baby who is now in “a studio apartment” of sorts…as opposed to disavowing the baby who “a...

Judging from the debris in the “studio apartment” the young bird and his momma were partying there for awhile. They are gone today… The other baby, #2, is still there, taking up 90% of the original nest. No wonder one of them had to leave! I suspect Baby ...

I finally saw the mother when she divebombed me for going near the bird in the nest. And then I got her on film! WRONG- I got the little guy who left early on film. He's been sitting up here for 3 days. Here it is about 30 feet away and 15-18 feet up. Wai...
