Awesome - the knives have arrived!
After months of hearing you talk about them, they are finally here! They are even more beautiful than I imagined! Congratulations! In Thai culture when one gifts a sharp object like a knife, the receiver should return a coin to the giver. I remember my mother telling me that Thai superstition holds that if this exchange doesn't take place then the relationship will be severed some time in the future. When I bought my cousin Paul a nice chef's knife a few Christmases ago my mom made him give me a quarter in return. 
Gorgeous knives! It was fun seeing you today. Sad that the Moser will be gone for a few months to Switzerland, but it will be better than new when it returns, I'm sure!

Many stories behind this tradition but it goes something like - in order not to sever a friendship/relation the the giftee should buy the knife and the coin is the vehicle to such. It is a bit like when you offer someone a wallet you should always include...

For conveniece
You would give the knife and the coin. The giftee would upon receipt give you the coin as payment for the knife. There is supposedly something about giftee purchasing the knife that removes the risk of a severing a relation. Bill

I think she'll like it. She's always admired knives, but it would never occur to her to actually purchase one that was handmade. I'm curious to see how she'll react, but I don't plan to give it to her for a couple of months. Best, Jed

Ed, I chose this "ladder" pattern.
The maker and I discussed basic parameters for the knife -- it's size and shape, the pattern for the blade, and materials for the scales, liners and bolsters. I did not know what the patter would be on the bolsters, only that he would use a mosaic. Best, ...
