A Busy Bay on Labor Day

Sep 02, 2024,20:05 PM

We walked around Mission Bay this morning, dressed as tourists and taking pictures right and left. It was jammed with pedestrians, bikes, boats and wildlife (amazingly!).

There’s always drama at the boat launch ramp (a policeman sitting in his car nearby in case any conflicts broke out).

I have to say this paddleboarding lady had a good figure but not very good judgement in her launch timing; her dog was clearly saying “Mom, is this a good idea?!

In addition to the normal crowds, we saw two one-legged men.

That’s suspicious … could there be a conference going on?

The usual sorts of friendly-stranger-banter

and “Oh yeah, I’ll take your picture"

These cheerful folks are locals with the task of power washing the sidewalk, but on Labor Day? At least they were having fun on their break, so we took their picture smile

An atypical family nowadays, Dad, Mom, 5 kids on various forms of transport … all came out of a small, very crowded minivan.

The bigger picture

This lady set her video camera on the bench and filmed herself skating in circles for about 10 minutes while the guy waited patiently.

Meanwhile the eastern, fast side of the bay was buzzing.

Jennifer and Clarissa were out on the water today instead of working in the kitchen…

A bring-your-own-net volleyball game was going on to our left.

And a giant beetle buzzed us and headed west. We followed him, looking for some animal action.

A blue bird, not quite looking like a scrub jay.

Ground squirrel looking enviously at the bay.

Another one on the grass was frozen in place, hoping I wasn’t going to spot him. In fact, I was looking at a rabbit just past him, but the rabbit didn’t freeze, it ran. When I took this picture, the squirrel ran too.

I followed the squirrel with my camera, and what do you know? I could almost hear the rabbit whispering “You fool! you gave us both away by coming here!"

Meanwhile back at the bay a fisherman was working on brunch.

I suspect sardines are on the menu.

A close-up, bokeh shot.

The very wide shot from the same position.

Action in the west half of the bay.

Architecture photo!

These folks headed onto a boat. We felt left out (whine)

We decided we were hungry anyway, and headed for home.

I’m always surprised when I get home and “develop” the photos. The rabbit was a shock too, I had no idea he was right there on the edge, under the bush in the shade. I did take a photo before the squirrel got there even though I didn’t see the rabbit (100...

That's easily the best camouflaged rabbit I've ever seen!

Not that I've studied their behavioral patterns, but I've seen them countless times, and never witnessed such strategic nous!! Cheers, Filip

That was painted on a large piece of white paper, off a roll, the kind they use to cover banquet tables. It was in the closet in a classroom at the school where my wife taught. It had been part of a large theatre backdrop, painted in the 80’s by 5-6th gra...

Great story! How does your wife feel about sharing your house with Shakespeare? 😉

My dad used to have a zodiac (the inflatable boat not the watch!) so I spent countless hours helping him get the boat off or back on the trailer and you are right there was always plenty of drama, a great place to observe human nature in real time with a ...

We were merrily cruising on the River Wey near Weybridge, heading for the Thames, when a ranger flagged us down and said, "You can't use a boat with a motor here" I was shocked "Huh? Where is that posted?" He said "Do you have a boat license for the Wey N...

It has to be "The Qualified Captain" and his channel. Some of the material is scary, even while always based upon stupidity. But the boat ramp stuff is priceless. If I lived near a boat ramp, I would grab a lawn chair and beer in the afternoons and go han...

I live near San Diego and Mission Bays, and near us are more than 10 launch ramps open to the public, plus a couple more for military personnel, and two or three more for private yacht clubs. Not to mention the lakes around here too! You have given me a w...
