Rolex

you _may_ get use to having no date...!

prior to getting my sub, i had been very very adamant about having the day and date on my watches; a date at minimum. in fact, triple date preferred and perpetual calendar always if i had it my way... as a corollary, i had dismissed any thoughts of ever owning any watch without a date function (including the rolex chronograph and submariner).

this was further reinforced when i read through the recurring posts on various rolex forums: "should i buy a sub or sub date?"

the posts usually generate replies such as:

o       spend a little more and get the sub date and don't look back.
o       spend a little more so you don't look so cheap.
o       buy it if you can live without the date.
o       the bracelet is awful, the watch is over-rated, don't buy a rolex, ever. buy a [insert another watch make/model here] instead.
o       buy whichever sub you prefer on your wrist.
o       the sub is awesome as it is (i'm fair!), and does not need a date/cyclop.

then one day, i received a 14060M as a present - it turned out to be one of the most comfortable watches i've ever worn, and now that i live in tropical asia, it is almost always on my wrist (replacing a triple date zenith el primero).

in fact, i like it so much (bracelet and all) that when mine was lost on a dive boat, i called my AD long distance to set one aside and collected it shortly after landing at the airport.

what does this mean to me?

o       by making an effort to remember today's date and day, i keep better track of time.
o       i am more adaptable than i thought.
o       slowly, the daytona is calling out to me (uh oh).

in retrospect, the sub would have been a permanent part of my watch collection a long time ago had i been less "discriminatory."

what does this mean to you?

don't dismiss a (any) watch simply because you feel or because someone tells you that "something else is better" - first try it out for yourself before deciding if it suits you.

as you're unlikely to take a big hit if you flipped the sub, this means you can buy it, wear it, and perhaps trade it in towards a sub date later if you're truly unable to wear a watch without a date.
