This are those replacements that were once supposed to improve the watch reliability and general quality. There were plenty of ingenuous owners like me who literally smiled at their modern dials and didn't know their watches will lose character and economical value after receiving such apparently mandatory "customisations".
But then again, here we are.

Nice one! I always wondered where the ridiculous statement that it takes a year to make a Rolex comes from.
False advertising, straight from the source! Can't argue about the watch though - truly an icon.

in extracting the iron ore, smelting into steel, etc
Excellent point! In fact one can argue that it takes millions of years to make a Rolex.
That iron ore has to arrive on planet earth to begin with.
I've owned a Rolex Seadweller for almost 20 years and haven't found one lost empire yet.
I'm starting to think they were just yanking my chain. Although to be fair, I did find my lost set of keys once.

WE went through a very high inflation period in the 1970s. I'd say $225 USD back in 1968 would be worth around $2000 USD today!

The German side of Switzerland is more serious and engineering focused. The French side can be both engineering focused and more marketing oriented. Perhaps the marketing and the French side of Rolex helped Rolex seal its dominance!
