The "sigma" dial is called so because it has a lower case letter "sigma" next to "Swiss"

The reason behind the "sigma" symbol was to underline the craftsmanship and quality of Swiss traditional watchmaking in the upcoming competition with the quarts watches. What the sigma marking really means is that the indexes and the hands are made of solid gold. Beware that numerous watches with gold indexes and hands do NOT bear the sigma marking. But to (some) collectors this has a value. Hence I would say that the "sigma dial is sought after by collectors). The manufactures using the sigma symbol on the dial were members if APRIOR ("l’Association pour la Promotion Industrielle de l'Or ") - an initiative taken to promote the use of precious metals in watchmaking as a symbol of Swiss quality watchmaking. You will also find the letter "sigma" engraved on gold cases and bracelets.
