It is much harder to come across a watch that match the owner's birthday let alone a vintage watch. I won't hesitate to get the 1680. More so if is in pristine condition.
He can always go back and buy himself a JLC Geographic later on the anniversary :P

Is the retailer reputable? It is a shame it does not have papers as that is always a big plus with a watch that old. I agree with you on Rolex sometimes being seen as common. But I think that definitely does not apply to vintage Rolex...and in the Red Sub...
