Rolex 5512 gilt 1965
Jan 11, 2013,18:04 PM
The Rolex 5512 has four main dial configurations for the glossy gilt dials. In the chapter ring segment we have the two line and the four line always PCG and between 1959 and 1962 +~. Both examples below have the exclamation point at 6.
Then we move to the transitional year 1963 for the Rolex 5512 where we see the non chapter ring Swiss only glossy gilt. The case remains PCG. There are various underline positions.
Finally the forth of the gilt 5512 dials from 1964 - 1966. We have the Swiss T <25 glossy gilt with round crown guards. The serial range in this segment ends in the 1.4 mil range. I will try to snap a few more pictures of the models together.
I will try and put a 5512 gilt report together soon to explore this model in more details.

You are already living on the dark side so nothing can hold you back. I have just been trying to systematically cover the bases. I have some coverage with the tropical dials but it is always a personal thing. There is no homogenous way to classify them. B...
Very interesting, Bill

These gilt dial Rolexes
By: Ubik : February 14th, 2013-04:40
are always so tempting when I see them. They appeal to everything that I find so appealing in vintage watches. A couple of questions, if I may. Of the dial configurations are some rarer than others? In terms of collectability, are some more desired than o...
Very good question about rarity
By: Bill : February 14th, 2013-08:36
I think I would answer simply all the gilt dial watches are rare and yes some maybe a little more that others... But... I would really answer this by saying finding a 5512 gilt dial in any of the configurations which is in very good condition is rare. So ...
Thanks for the answer Bill

I follow you, condition is the trump card here. What about the case then, from the little I understand about the 5513 a PCG case commands a premium over the square crown guards. Do you think that applies here as well? The reason I ask is that to us outsid...
The case is an important feature also
By: Bill : February 17th, 2013-14:55
the PCG case is a feature associated with a specific time period and the dial that is associated with a PCG would be a chapter ring dial ending +/- 1963 with a non chapter ring swiss only dial. The square crown guard was a transition from the no crown gua...
Thanks for the clarification Bill.

Lots of different moving parts to keep track off on these Rolexes. It keeps me the eternal student.
Thank you! Wonderful report

Bill Thank you for a great report! Your post is very informative and the pictures speak volumes. Did some of these dials have radium paint? I'm looking forward to your future post!
Radium was banned by the 60's
By: Bill : February 17th, 2013-15:54
So most dials had stated to transition to Tritium. Unless you have the right tools to test for radiation is hard to say. Just from a visual pount of view most of the dials that I have observed that I believed to be radium where not glossy dials but more o...
I like your style
