Interesting conundrum....

If the 6542 were all original, the choice would be easy. However, from your posting it appears the the bezel insert is a replacement, and the dial has been re-lumed. These are not de minimus issues in the world of vintage Rolex. The bezel is what it is - the original insert would add thousands of dollars to the value of the watch, but replaced bezels on these are not shocking as original bezels are quite rare to see. But a re-lumed dial, in my view, is a serious mark against the watch. There are many collectors who would not touch this watch with the dial having been redone. And, at least to my eyes, the hands also do not appear to be original.
Put-togethers are common in the Rolex universe as Rolex does not offer extracts for their vintage watches, but in most cases, the sellers either do not know what is not original or elect not to disclose it. Here, with the 6542, it is quite obvious. And as one earlier poster suggested, expert eyes may turn up other issues with the watch.
The Sub is certainly not in perfect condition, but my guess is that is far closer to original than is the 6542. This matters quite a bit in my view.
I would do a fair bit more research before pulling the trigger on either one. Speak to a few vintage Rolex experts, as the answer may become clear with more knowledge.
Let us know what you choose!
