I like them a lot.

They are the "classic" Rolex, and they have a great look: sporty but genuinely appropriate with a suit. They have a compact, energetic look that I would describe as "jaunty." They are also very comfortable because they are light.
Unless you like a watch with a date indicator, the only real 36mm substitute is reference 1018, which looks a bit more formal because it has less robust dial elements and also occupies a different price range. (Obviously, that's among chronometers; if you're willing to countenance a non-chronometer movement, there are Air Kings.)
I wore a 34mm Rolex frequently for a long time (reference 1002) until my wife appropriated it for her personal use. (I still have my extra-long bracelet in case she ever gives it back.) I routinely wear reference 1018s and find them better suited to my wrist size than I do the 1002, but I have a very large wrist (at least 205mm in circumference; I have to buy "long" straps).
